Greek Fourlis Group to Open Bulgaria1st IKEA Store 2011 End

Bulgarias first IKEA store will be opened in Sofia in the last quarter of 2011, announced George Alevizos, Finance Manage of the Greek group of companies Fourlis.

In an exclusive interview for the Greek Survey of Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency), Alevizos said the economic crisis has not delayed the opening of the IKEA stores in Bulgaria. The Fourlis company is IKEA's franchisee for Bulgaria and several other Balkan countries.

“We believe to the cyclical aspect of any crisis and Bulgarian economy will return soon in positive growth rates and it is very important when this happens, we will be there ready to offer a better everyday life to the many people in the local market, the Fourlis manager stated.

Alevizos told Novinite.com that Fourlis intended to open at least one more IKEA store to be located near the Black Sea city of Varna, and might also consider opening a third store within the next 5 years.

The Greek manager praised the working relations that the Fourlis Group has with Bulgarian authorities and said that any potential traffic issues with the Sofia IKEA store will be resolved.

Fourlis Group Manager George Alevizos: IKEA Set to Offer New Way of Living for Bulgarians

When is the first IKEA store in Bulgaria scheduled to be opened? Has its opening been delayed by the crisis?

The first IKEA store in Bulgaria is planed to open in Sofia in the last quarter of 2011.

IKEA stores are a long term investment and the construction period together with all the necessary permits is approximately 2 to 3 years.

The crisis in such a long term investment does not play a significant role unless there is a funding issue which is not the case. Therefore we do not consider that there is any delay especially due to the crisis.

We believe to the cyclical aspect of any crisis and Bulgarian economy will return soon in positive growth rates and it is very important when this happens, we will be there ready to offer a better everyday life to the many people in the local market.

Why hasn't IKEA come to Bulgaria earlier? Why does the Fourlis company believe the Bulgarian market is ready for IKEA now?

Every market has its development stages and every company its own priorities and plans. Bulgaria is today ready to accept, host and spread the IKEA concept across the Country.

Fourlis Group has decided to enter the Market now based on a set of feasibility studies, search of sites and common agreement with Franchisor (Inter-IKEA systems BV).

Before the end of 2008 there was a boom in construction and real estate in Bulgaria, and respectively of the demand for furniture. Has the fact that all that is now gone as a result of the crisis caused you to modify substantially your investment plans for Bulgaria?

We have not changed our investment plans for Bulgaria. IKEA is selling furniture . it is also selling home furnishing accessories but most of all is offering a new way of living at home.

We should not and we do not base our calculations on new buildings and licenses. We see every household old or new as a potential customers and we have our way (value for money offer) to make them feel good with us and trust us no matter the period or the economy stage.

What will be the scope of the investment of Fourlis in the IKEA stores in Bulgaria? How many IKEA stores do you plan to open in Bulgaria, and where will they be located? How many people will you employ?

The plan for IKEA in Bulgaria is to operate 2 and may be 3 stores in a horizon of 5 years from now. Apart from Sofia where we will operate our biggest store, we plan to operate one more store in the area of Varna. Every IKEA store employees approximately 300 to 350 people including part timers.

A couple of Bulgarian producers have been working with IKEA. What share of the products in the Bulgarian IKEA stores will come from Bulgarian furniture-makers?

Every franchisee of IKEA places the orders through the central ordering IKEA Supply chain system. Sourcing is directed through the central ordering system of the supply chain which takes into account cases you just referred to.

In November 2009, Bulgarias Regional Development Minister Rosen Plevneliev admitted the future IKEA store in Sofia might have problems operating because of the congested traffic of the Sofia beltway and a road expansion which will not be completed on time. What is your agreement with the Bulgarian authorities which will provide for the proper operation of the IKEA store in Sofia despite the congested traffic?

We have a very good cooperation with Bulgarian authorities and we are sure that we will work together in order the store to operate properly and serve Sofia people the way that an IKEA has to do.

Do not forget that shopping in an IKEA store is an experience. Our experience from Greece and Cyprus showed that even under the best conditions, the opening creates traffic but eventually the consumers find the way to enjoy IKEA experience together with their family.

How many stores do you operate in the Balkans region, and how many more do you plan to open? How significantly has the economic crisis affected your plans for the entire region?

Currently, we operate 5 IKEA stores (4 in Greece and 1 in Cyprus). This year we will open one more store in Greece and next year comes the Sofia store.

Our plan is to operate at least 10 stores in Greece Cyprus and Bulgaria. I mentioned earlier that we believe to the cyclical aspect of any crisis, therefore long term investments should not be affected from short or medium term macroeconomic instability. Maybe that period of time is an opportunity for good concepts like IKEA.

As a significant Greek company, do you have other investment projects in Bulgaria besides the IKEA stores?

Fourlis Group has a presence of approximately 15 years in Bulgaria. Initially through wholesaling of electrical appliances that gave its position the last 3 years in retail of athletic goods (INTERSPORT).

We currently operate 2 successful INTERSPORT stores and we plan to operate more than 5 stores in the future

Govt Ecstatic about 1st IKEA Store in Bulgaria

Senior epresentatives of the Bulgarian government were jubilant during the ground-breaking ceremony of the first IKEA store in the country.

“We all know that when IKEA comes this means good investment climate, and a stable state,” Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said at during the ceremony.

Borisov gave the start of the construction of the IKEA store together with Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and the Regional Development Minister Rosen Plevneliev.

According to the Prime Minister, the operation of the IKEA store will help Bulgarian wood processing plants as timber will not have to be exported in such mass quantities as it is at present.

Both Sofia Mayor Fandakov and Regional Development Minister Plevneliev declared that IKEA’s arrival in Bulgaria is good news not just for Sofia but also for the entire country, also noting that the future store in the capital might attract clients from neighboring states.

“IKEA changes entire cities. This store is evidence that international investors see Bulgaria as a platform for the development of their business strategy,” Plevneliev commented while admitting that the future IKEA store will likely cause further traffic jams on the already congested Sofia Beltway.

“The opening of the IKEA store will jam the entire city but I wish for this opening nonetheless,” the Minister said. Plevneliev was the first to raise alarm in the fall of 2009 that the expansion of the Sofia Beltway is falling behind, and might not be ready by the time the IKEA store is opened. He has claimed to have taken measures to speed up the road rehabilitation and construction.

According to estimates of the Fourlis Group, IKEA’s first store in Bulgaria will attract 1.6 million clients in the first year after its opening.

The Greek company Fourlis is IKEA’s franchise holder for Greece, Bulgaria, and Cyprus. It plans to invest EUR 50 M in the construction of store, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2011. It will employ about 350 people.

The Greek company has also made it clear it would consider the opening of another IKEA store in Varna, and potentially even a third store in the Plovdiv-Stara Zagora region in Southern Bulgaria.

The IKEA store in Sofia with a total area of about 30 000 square meters will be located at 216 Beltway road;
it will feature a parking lot with 1 200 spaces as well as a restaurant with 600 seats.

“We know that when IKEA enters a new market, the home furniture market starts growing. There is increased interest in these products leading to the development of the entire industry. These are our expectations for Bulgaria,” said Vassilis Fourlis, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Fourlis Group in a statement the day before the opening.

Two new furniture chain will enter Bulgaria

A friend finished his new family hotel and went to Thessaloniki to buy sheets and forks of the building. At the end of next year it will not need it because we need to ready the first IKEA in Sofia.

But IKEA is not only a new circuit that will run in Bulgaria. At various stages of penetration are two new dealer in furniture, furnishings and household goods. @ Home will open its first store within days, Germany's Bauhaus is before signing the contract for the land on which to build its pilot project. There's a third chain, which is only a stage research - Austrian furniture chain Kika.

Total between the three that entered the market, which decreased and was not great, but at the same time emerged as a potential for competition is still weak in the cost - quality - range.

Home

In the second half of the month will be ready the first store of the new chain of furniture, household goods, furniture - @ Home. Investor it is the owner of Technomarket - K K &
B Electronics. Originally planned to chain says Home Centre, but later the concept was further developed and adapted by the company said.

The first project will be in Grand Mall Varna will open shortly after 15 July. Then will come the second - in the "
Galeria Plovdiv. The third store will be in Sofia Tsarigradsko road as part of the current store Technomarket. This year will probably have another site in Sofia retail park Vladimir Vazov.

@ Home stores will have an area between 1800 and 2500 square meters They will have all small and big things for the home - from forks and spoons in candles, pots and pillows to smaller furniture and household appliances. On some sites will be adjacent to shops Technomarket, the goal is to get synergy. The range will include branded products such as home collections of Esprit and Mexx, Roca bathrooms Porcelain or WMF.

"
The development of the chain should not be affected by the crisis. In a free market niche. There is a shop where to go and buy everything for your home in one place. In which there is sufficient as a wide range of articles and prices, "
said manager Technomarket Vesselin Vladimirov.

There is another argument may be summarized as follows: if you change your TV each year, the wine glasses are often broken and must be replaced.

Wholesale

The second chain, which is increasingly closer to the Bulgarian market represents the typical form of "
DIY"
. Germany's Bauhaus is before signing the contract for the land which will be built its first hypermarket in Sofia, said Veselin Rusev from BG mols - a company that consults chain. Her shop is expected to be of the commercial fleet Sredets behind Central Station in Sofia, confirmed a representative of investors in the park. The contract must be signed by the middle of this month.

Bauhaus at least four years examining the Bulgarian market. As in most Germanic family companies decisions are taken slowly, consistently, so that risk is minimized. This explains why the chain steps now, even though the crisis seriously reduce business DIY.

Bauhaus hypermarkets will be around 20 sq m and will include all kinds of furniture, an assortment of furniture finishing and repair. Direct competitors in the chain are considered Baumax, Praktiker and Mr. Bricolage. The aim of the new player to have at least two or three sites in Sofia and then expand to other cities.

There is another explanation why the small steps Bauhaus Bulgarian market in times of crisis. Companies of this size to compete not so much a national basis (country by country) and regional. So they look to overtake its main rivals in Europe. And since Bulgaria does not have brands like Obi, Hornbach and Leroy Merlin - European chains, which leads to greater competition, Bauhaus strives to occupy early positions.

Study

At least a year for the Austrian furniture chain Kika, which has emerged as one of the largest retailers in Austria and Eastern Europe, Bulgarian opipva environment. Senior sources said the market. Kika by the official replied to Capital: "
At the time Kika provides entering the Bulgarian market. However, we do not foreclose to get a foothold in the future."

Yet the opening of Kika stores in Bulgaria is not without its logic. Chain expansion has focused particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. There are already business in Romania, and currently expanding its network in Serbia, where one object, and is considering preparing a second third. You can then focus on Bulgaria, the newspaper said a source.

Furthermore, Kika has a strong partner in Bulgaria. This is AIKO furniture chain, which is among the largest furniture retailers in the country with a turnover of nearly 37 million last year. Both companies have a commercial relationship and exchange experience and information.

Market

All new players will enter the market, which is directly related to the real estate business, that drop. Furnished are less homes being built are less houses. In medium term, however, representatives of business furniture and household goods awaiting restoration. Therefore, some new players are seeking right now to take over positions - to anticipate future competition. And it will grow more serious at the end of next year. Then opened the first IKEA. And as history has demonstrated, the arrival of IKEA of all new market environment changes, customers win, and competitors lose. If not settled firmly on the market.

I can just imagine all those disappointed people going back to the store because there is a bit missing from their flat packs and getting the Glum face followed by the well rehearsed and mandatory standard shop assistant reply of 'Nay Englichanni,Nay Resbrum!' then they walk away! or the 'Necessary you travel to service centre for remont!' Which no doubt would cost more in diesel that the item is worth! God I love shopping for the well packaged seconds on offer here in Bulgaria. There must be a really huge distribution centre somewhere in China for snide seconds with loads of Chinese sitting in deck chairs laughing their heads off as fork lift trucks drive past with palletized items labelled-'Destination Bulgaria-Caution fragile as already broken in box!'

I do love Bulgaria by the way! But we've all been there.......

Bulgaria's furniture industry will hardly ever manage to recover its pre-2008 output even after the economic crisis is overcome, according to the director of furniture producers' chamber.

The Bulgarian furniture industry will lose permanently about 20% of the volume it had before the crisis, Stefan Ganev, executive director of the Bulgarian Chamber for Wood-Processing and Furniture Industries told BNR Thursday.

Because of the decline in construction of new homes and new hotels, Bulgaria's domestic furniture market has declined by about 50% since the start of the economic crisis three years ago, the Chamber estimates.

The Chamber has no information about bankruptcies among Bulgarian furniture producers but reports that some companies from the sector have forced their workers to take leaves.

Ganev has forecast that even after the crisis is fully overcome, there will hardly be a substantial growth in Bulgaria's domestic market because of the devastating construction slump.

He welcomed the opening of the first IKEA store in Bulgaria which is to come in the fall of 2011.

"
We shouldn't deamonize the arrival of strong players on the market. They introduce their standards and their way of doing business, which helps our producers,"
he commented.

KEA to Attract 1.5 M Visitors during 1st Year in Bulgaria

The first Bulgarian store of the Swedish furniture giant IKEA aims at attracting over 1.5 million visitors during the first year after its opening.

The information was announced by the Greek Fourlis company, which has the IKEA franchise rights for Bulgaria.

The first IKEA store is located on the capital Sofia's beltway and is scheduled to open on September 29th.

The free furniture catalogue is being distributed starting Friday to households in the city in 750 000 copies. The prices listed inside are valid until August, 2012. In addition to Sofia, the catalogue will be distributed in the cities of Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, Pernik and Kuystendil.

Fourlis further announced the company aims at having 10% of the market during the first year and later become a leader, but declined giving details on expected revenues. The company's management stresses they would focus on having 1.5 million of visitors, which would be deemed a greater success than a large turnover.

Bulgaria has no official data on the furniture market in the country, but according to companies' experts and consultants it ranges between BGN 450 and 550 M, meaning IKEA's sales in the first year could reach BGN 45 to 55 M.

The first IKEA store in Bulgaria will have an area of 29 000 square meters and 1 200 parking spots in the parking lot and garage. It will offer 7 500 products with 55 furnished room models and three different-size apartments.

The plans for its launch date from 2008, but construction did not start until 2010 with the main reason for the delay being the beltway repair works. The road must reopen before the official start of the store.

IKEA plans opening a second store in the Black Sea capital of Varna, but the project is in a very early stage.

With 324 stores in 38 countries IKEA is the largest furniture trader in the world. In 2010, the company's turnover is estimated at EUR 24 B. In addition to Bulgaria, Fourlis is developing the furniture chain in Greece and Cyprus.

[size=55:2wimsgxn]Sofia echo

IKEA is here

Fans of flat packs and affordable, streamlined home furnishings will be pleased to hear that IKEA will open its first store in Sofia at 216 Ring Road (Okolovrusten put), near the intersection with Bistrishko Chaussee Blvd on September 20.

The chain, which is renowned for its low-cost designs, currently has 324 stores in 38 countries – 326 stores if you count forthcoming openings in Melbourne, Australia and Sofia – with more than eight million sq m of retail space worldwide. IKEA stores span Europe, the Middle East, the US, Asia Pacific and the Caribbean.

IKEA was founded in Sweden in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad. The name IKEA stems from a combination of the first letters of Kamprad's name and the first letters of country houses and villages in which he grew up: Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd.

Originally, Kamprad sold pens, wallets, frames, watches and sundry items that could satisfy customers' needs at low prices. Furniture was added to the IKEA product range in 1948 and in 1955 the brand started designing its own furniture. Initially, Kamprad was selling the products from his house and through mail order until he opened a store in Almhult. This was the site of the first IKEA store and was used as the prototype for the next outlets.

Next, Kamprad started to send product catalogues through the milk truck. This led to the creation of the IKEA catalogues, the first of which were printed in Sweden in 1951. The rest, as they say, is history. According to Forbes magazine, as of 2011 Kamprad –- now 85 years old –- is the 162nd wealthiest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $6 billion in 2011.

Swedish business weekly Veckans Affarer, however, has claimed that he could be the world's richest man with an estimated wealth of between $50 billion and $90 billion, owning as he does the IKEA franchise through Interogo Foundation and Stichting INGKA Foundation.

With too many stores to mention, a smattering of dates outlines the company's expanding empire. The first IKEA store in Sweden opened in 1958, in 1963 in Norway, in 1969 in Denmark, in 1973 in Switzerland, in 1980 in Spain and in the UK in 1987. In the Balkans, Greece's first IKEA store opened in Greece (Thessaloniki) in 2001, in Turkey (Istanbul) in 2005, in Romania (Bucharest) in 2007 and Cyprus the same year.

Defying the downturn

The IKEA chain had 699 million visitors during the 2010 fiscal year. Turnover for the fiscal year 2010 (September 2009 to August 2010) was 23.8 billion euro, coming from 22.7 billion euro in 2009, 22.5 billion euro in 2008, 20.7 billion euro in 2007 and 17.7 billion euro in 2006, so the rate of accelerating profit may have slowed with the crisis, but IKEA's position is still strong.

Apostolos Petalas, CEO of the Fourlis Group which partners the IKEA group and is responsible for the development of the IKEA concept in Bulgaria, Greece and Cyprus, praised the Bulgarian Ministry of Regional Development for supporting the new Sofia store. Speaking at a news conference on September 1, Petalas said that he believed that success would come from balancing the interests of consumers, business partners, employees, sponsors and society. Underpinning all this, he said, was IKEA's "
passion for better living"
and the company's key watchwords: integrity, respect and efficiency.

"
Success is not only what you achieve, but how you achieve it,"
Petalas said.

Panos Katiforis, managing director of House Market S.A (an affiliate company) set out IKEA's longstanding and enduring global vision – to create a wide range of well-designed furniture and home furnishing projects at low prices so that as many people as possible can afford them.

Functional design

IKEA home furnishings are well-known for their modern and functional allure, although of course opinions vary about the quality of their merchandise. Before products are even constructed, a price is fixed and designs and suppliers are then tailored to the cost. Products are made in factories all over the world, in line with IKEA's strict quality specifications.

A large number of IKEA products are designed so as to be easily assembled by consumers. They are placed in "
flat packs"
that can be transported from the store to one's home. This is not just a gimmick – it helps to reduce warehousing, transportation and assembly volumes and costs, resulting in a lower final price for consumers. Every IKEA store offers 7500 products that are continuously renewed throughout the year.

The IKEA catalogue, first published in 1952, is distributed every September. In Bulgaria its distribution began on September 3. The Bulgarian IKEA catalogue presents about 3500 products and runs to 370 pages. Included are beds, pillowcases, desks, side lamps, wine glasses, laundry baskets, high chairs, baby foods, drying racks, cutlery, wardrobes, mirrors, shelves and sofas, to name but a few items. Next year's IKEA catalogue will be published in 31 languages and distributed in 39 countries.

Sofia store

The new Sofia outlet, occupying 29 000 sq m, will have 55 showrooms, a 630-seat restaurant, 7500 products, 19 checkouts (with mechanised sales options), more than 350 staff, 1200 parking spaces (850 covered and 350 open) as well as a free children's playground equipped with trained personnel. Customers can also visit a store with authentic Swedish food products, drinks and sweets.

Questioned by journalists, IKEA representatives declined to reveal employees' wages but said that the staff were well-trained and that preparations had been laid to deal with the kind of rush that ensued following the opening of cut-price supermarket Lidl.

Crucially, IKEA's representatives said they want to provide a fun day out for the whole family. They declined to forecast turnover, preferring to see the first results, but said that 1.5m visitors were expected in the first year of business. Should this "
footfall"
transpire, then the IKEA store would be deemed a success irrespective of sales and plans to open another store in Varna will go ahead.

"
If we don't achieve this, we won't bother about the figures,"
said Teo Mouratidis, IKEA's store manager in Bulgaria.

IKEA Opens First Outlet in Bulgaria amid Bad Publicity

Swedish furniture giant IKEA is opening its first store in the Bulgarian capital Sofia on Tuesday amid bad publicity over the allegedly steep prices set for the Balkan country, an issue which has stirred outrage in social networks.

The IKEA store in Sofia with a total area of about 30 000 square meters is located at 216 Beltway road. It features a parking lot with 1 200 spaces as well as a restaurant with 600 seats.

IKEA Bulgaria is a franchise of the Greek Fourlis company, which also has the IKEA rights for Greece and Cyprus.

A comparison between IKEA catalogues for Bulgaria, France, Romania and England shows that prices for most items are times higher in Bulgaria, according to local media and disgruntled consumers.

In the catalogue for Bulgaria, a fully furnished kitchen has a listed price of BGN 6 295, while in neighbouring Romania this price is EUR 1 100. A wardrobe in Bulgaria costs BGN 600 while it is sold for the equivalent of BGN 325 in Italy;
BGN 353 in the UK;
BGN 367 in Romania;
BGN 388 in France and BGN 556 in Greece. A couch in IKEA Bulgaria will cost BGN 498 while in France the same item is sold for EUR 179 or BGN 350.

The company has vehemently refuted the allegations, saying that it is not fair to compare the prices of specific IKEA products in various European markets by not accounting for all parameters of the products in question.

The interest among clients is expected to huge so the Sofia City Hall has advised residents and visitors of the capital to use public transportation for the much anticipated opening of the first IKEA store.

Buses on the 111 line will run 4 minutes apart and there will be more buses on the 69, 70, 122 and 123 lines.

George Alevizos, Finance Manage of the Greek group of companies Fourlis, told Novinite.com that Fourlis intended to open at least one more IKEA store to be located near the Black Sea city of Varna, and might also consider opening a third store within the next 5 years.

Fourlis has invested EUR 50 M in the construction of the first IKEA store in Bulgaria, which will employ about 350 people.

IKEA Store Gets Almost 100 000 Shoppers in 1st Weekend

Close to 100 000 shoppers visited the first ever Bulgarian IKEA store during its first weekend, IKEA Bulgaria announced Monday.

The store, which got about 17 000 clients on its opening day, was formally launched on September 20, 2011. It is located on the Sofia beltway.

IKEA Bulgaria said that over the first weekend the store's furniture and accessories enjoyed massive interest, with coaches being an unexpected hit. The IKEA sector for kids also enjoyed much popularity.

The company also said there have been no issues with parking, which was earlier suspected to become a potential issue as the ring road in Sofia is still to be expanded.

IKEA Bulgaria reminds that it expects 1.5 million shoppers in its Sofia store during its first year. IKEA Sofia employs 330 people, and the company says the number of its employees is to grow as it is to expand in Bulgaria.

IKEA Bulgaria is a franchise of the Greek Fourlis company, which also has the IKEA rights for Greece and Cyprus.
