If you are already an owner of a Bulgarian Sheep Dog, Karakachan dog, please consider joining our new and growing organization. The Karakachan is a breed of dog that originated in Bulgaria as a mountain livestock guardian dog. Other names are Karakachan Shepherd and Thracian Mollos. The dog is named after the Karakachans, Balkan nomadic shepherds. Due to their conservative stock-breeding traditions, they have preserved some of the oldest breeds of domestic animals in Europe: . The Karakachan dog may be a descendant of ancient Balkan domestic dogs, possibly since the time of the Thracians. In ancient Thracian treasures, figures were found of big, long haired guardian dogs with curled tails. The Karachan is part of the origin of the Bulgarian Shepherd dog, with which it should not be confused. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia Link checked and all OK Oddy

Thanks Bernadette, for restoring the link. As for owning a Bulgarian Sheep dog you must 1st think is this dog for you. They are not a dog that requires loads of walking as in the natural roll they walk, lay down and graze with sheep. Our dogs are fed about 500g to 600g of food a day. The most important thing with these dogs is socialization from an early age, ours where socialized with people, pheasants, chickens, partridge, cats and recently we have introduced a new puppy to them. The dogs are what they say on the tin Livestock Guardian dogs.

thanks very helpful, i'll have to look into them more before i decide as i use my dogs to guard my horses, so it would be perfect from that point of view but mine come out with me when i ride so would need to do about 30 - 40 miles per day. i had assumed they would be simmilar to the collies as there a sheep dog breed but in light of what you say they may not be an energetic enough breed of dog.

What I have found with ours is when you throw a ball its a case of you threw it you get it, I also have a Breton which I trained again a different dog, she will flush, point and run all day, but never tires of retrieving, but doesn't guard. The energy in the dog is contained to Live stock Guarding, and do perform this task very well, I have taken ours to Spain some years back they traveled all the way and back to BG with out any probs ( this was pre EU days ). I have also found when out walking they plod along but there is no aggression as they have nothing to guard.
