Half of the milk can be cut from the market next year
At least 50 000 small and medium dairy farms will be cut from the market next year because they are below the acceptable European standards for quality. For this reporting representatives of the agricultural associations a few months before the expiry of the derogation granted by the European Commission (EC) of Bulgaria to align domestic standards with European ones.
In 2009, the commission allowed an extraordinary extension of the buffer period in which the Bulgarian livestock farms can be sold domestically non-standard cow's milk. Grant extensions until the end of 2011, during which time farmers were expected to improve conditions for production and storage of milk, so as to retain their business. More Info
