String of mild earthquakes hits Bulgaria

Sofia echo Wed, Oct 28 2009

A series of mild earthquakes were felt in Bulgaria, starting at 12.21pm on October 28 2009, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Scientists from the Seismological Center and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Institute of Geophysics triangulated the tremor at about 245km south-east of the capital city, Sofia.

The earthquake was 3.2 on the Richter scale, near Toundja municipality in the Yambol region, the Civil Protection National Service said.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) confirmed that a 3.1-magnitude tremor epicentred 57km south-east of the town of Stara Zagora, was felt, causing no damage or injuries.

The follow-up to the tremor was slightly stronger, 3.2-magnitude, pinpointed at 10km underground, this time 54 km south-east of Stara Zagora.

The last jolt was a mild 2.8-magnitude at 1pm about 57km north-west of the Turkish city of Edirne, and 26km west of the Bulgarian town of Elhovo,

Scientists Assuage Bulgarians' Quake Fears

There will not be a devastating earthquake in Bulgaria in the next 2-3 years because the research has shown an activation of only weak ones, scientists claim.

The strongest earthquake that could happen in the Bulgarian capital would have a magnitude of 6.5 on Richter scale and would take at least 9000 victims.

According to scientists, because of the strong earthquakes that Bulgaria experienced about 100 years ago, much of the accumulated tension has been released and this is the reason why recently there have only been weaker quakes.

Sofia is the most dangerous zone because of the big population and the old buildings.

Scientists believe that the constructions in the center part of the capital are the most endangered because they have been renovated many times and the result of one earthquake on them would be catastrophic.

Earthquake in Sofia Results in 4 Fallen Chimneys

The 3.5 earthquake that shook Sofia on Friday has caused the falling of four chimneys in the Bulgarian capital.

National security teams are checking for other damages on the territory of Sofia.

The phone traffic has also been interrupted as a result of the rattling.

The epicenter has been in Sofia, at the 8th km of the "
Tsarigradsko Shosse"
Boulevard towards the Sofia Airport.

The director of the National Geophysics Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Nikolay Miloshev, has explained that earthquakes below 4.5 on the Richter scale are considered weak and they usually do not cause material damages.

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, the depth of the earthquake has been 2 km.

The National Seismology Institute has announced that the earthquakes that shook Sofia on Friday were two. They have been registered as 3.5 and 3.3 on the Richter scale and both had their epicenters in Sofia.

This is third earthquake in Sofia for the past two weeks.

On Thursday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale was felt around Sofia. On Friday early morning another quake hit southwest from Sofia but was not felt on the territory of the country.

Minister Assures of Robustness of Bulgarian Buildings against Earthquakes

Buildings in Bulgaria are fit to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of up to 7.5 on the Richter scale, according to Regional Development Minister Rosen Plevneliev.

Plevneliev, who is a construction entrepreneur himself and former manager of Lindner Bulgaria, has stated that even though the new construction in the country in the past years was done "
in euphoric haste"
, the structures of the buildings guaranteed that they will stand even in a 9-magnitude quake on the Medvedev scale, or 7.5-magnitude hit on the Richter scale.

His comment came a day after Sofia was hit by a 3.5-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale that caused no major damage.

The Minister told Darik Radio he was concerned for buildings where the owners changed the facades for their own needs.

He did confirm, however, even the robustness of the concrete panel buildings that were built all across Bulgaria during the communist period.

Sofia Deputy Mayor Suggests Earthquake Tax

The Deputy Mayor for Security from the Sofia municipality, Ivan Sotirov, has proposed the creation of a special fund for cases of earthquakes, with contributions from all properties.

Sotirov has proposed the implementation of a tax that, in his words, might be minimal, but should be divided among all properties in the Bulgarian capital.

The deputy mayor also pointed out that the Sofia municipality should begin investigating and investing in safe-proving of important buildings, like the public buildings and the critical infrastructure.

"
It is clear that we do not have the resources to do that,"
he said, explaining that the Sofia municipality does not have enough money for an anti-earthquake investigation of all the properties.

Sotirov added that a full investigation, confirmation and constructive improvements of all the buildings in the Bulgarian capital would require billions of Euro.

The proposition by the Sofia Deputy Mayor came as a result of the recent earthquakes that shook the Bulgarian capital and caused a panic among the Sofia citizens.

The earthquakes occured around 7.50 EET. Of course, no damages have been reported.

Three minor earthquakes of magnitudes 2.5-3.5 were felt in Sofia August and September.
