EU provides funds for healthy diet programs at school

The European Union is providing subsidies for healthy diet programs and better eating habits at school, Zinaida Zlatanova, Head of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria.
She specified that Bulgaria is implementing two schemes – School Milk and School Fruit. The EU provides a subsidy, enabling pupils to consume selected milk, fruit and vegetables at school and the coordinator of the two schemes in Bulgaria is State Agriculture Fund.
European Healthy Cooking Day will be marked on October 21. Zlatanova said you cannot handle unhealthy diet and obesity overnight and that’s why the EC Representation in Bulgaria gathers between 400 and 600 children for a fourth year in a row to raise their awareness of the issue and train them to teach their peers.
This year for the first time prominent Bulgarian athletes and volunteers from the National Sports Academy will lead sports events within the initiative.

That's very encouraging to hear!! Our daughter goes to nursery here and they feed the children a good amount of food but not what I would really want her to be eating. I think the food provided is very oily and high in sugar and probably salt. I was sending her in with a pure juice every day as I didn't want her having sugary drinks to top off all she was eating there. They told me not to bother as its natural pure juice, with no sugar, they are given at nursery....Then I saw the carton a few days later and it was peach juice, with lots of added sugar. I think that they do not realise themselves, just because it says peach juice on the carton does not mean its juice, (they only need to read the label to see the contents). Oh well, hopefully this healthy way of eating at schools will spread across BG quickly!!

Maybe Jamie Oliver can come over and do a series of BG 'School Dinners'!! Hehehehe...
