A nine-year-old child in Sofia was mauled by a dog and had to be taken to Pirogov hospital for emergency treatment, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported on October 30 2010.
Mihaela Simeonova was going for a stroll with a friend when a dog from the neighbouring house freed itself from the chain, and approached the children. Initially, the dog appeared to be friendly as it knew the children and it was more than happy to be stroked, but suddenly its mood turned vicious.
It began growling, then leaped onto the girl and tore into her legs and arms, the report said. The girl held on to a fence but the dog kept on biting and pulling. Eventually, Teodora Popilieva, the girl's mother rushed to her assistance.
"
The wounds and the tissue should recover in about two months,"
Doctor Atanas Katsarov from Pirogov told BNT.
"
But her mental scarring will last for years,"
he added.
Sofia Municipality have promised that all strays in the Manastirski Livadi borough, where the incident happened, will be taken to shelters. Additionally, the owner of the dog was fined 400 leva, while the family of the girl was advised to take court action against the owner.
