Bulgaria 46th in Global Prosperity Index
Bulgaria is ranked 46th among 110 countries worldwide in the 2010 Prosperity Index of the Legatum Institute, but is ranked last on the Average Satisfaction Ranking.
The overall ranking table is topped by Norway, followed by two other Northern European states – Finland and Denmark. The last three spots are occupied by Central African Republic, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.
Bulgaria takes the last 110th place in the Average Satisfaction Ranking.
In the overall table, Bulgaria is 46th, lagging just one position behind Brazil, which recently elected its first female President – Dilma Rousseff. Bulgaria is, according to the index, more prosperous than two of the 27 countries in EU – Latvia (47th) and Bulgaria's neighbour Romania (51st).
Among the biggest nations worldwide, the USA is ranked 10th,, Russia is 63rd and China is 58th.
This table ranks 110 countries, according to their overall abilities to foster the drivers of prosperity. It also provides the breakdown of the sub-index performances that lead to the overall rank. Among the criteria which are taken into account for the ranking are economy, governance, health, education and average satisfaction.
Bulgaria is placed 75th on the Economy Sub-Index ranking. “Although the official unemployment rate is around 6%, only 39%* of those surveyed confirmed they were employed in either paid or unpaid work, casting doubt on the official figures and placing Bulgaria in the bottom quartile of the Index on this variable“, the report states.
The Governance Sub-Index ranks Bulgaria 57th, stating that there has been no significant regime change since Bulgaria became a parliamentary democracy nearly 20 years ago.
