High Rents Depopulate Bulgarian Malls
Few shop-keepers could afford renting a premise in the luxurious trade centres across the country
"
We can barely afford paying the outrageously high rents here and, considering the falling turnover, we may soon go out of business,"
shop-keepers at Sofia's The Mall trade centre told the Standart. Last week they launched a protest putting their signatures on the windows of their shops with black markers. Mall owners are trying to lure the big retail chains to stay in their premises by promising them lower monthly rents. This unfair offer has enraged many smaller shop-keepers, many of whom have already shut down their businesses. The number of available commercial premises in Bulgaria has increased five times last year. Rents start from 10 or twelve Euro per square meter per month for big retail chains, up to 70 Euro per sqm per month.
