Taken from the Sofia Echo:
Bulgarian Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov appears to be full of optimism about Bulgaria's future judging by his most recent statement in which he said that in 10 years' time, Bulgaria will be one of the best European countries in which to live.
"
Ten years from now, Bulgaria will be the sort of country where everyone will want to live, study and work,"
Dyankov said during a Parliamentary Commission discussing the management of European funding programmes, cited by private Bulgarian television channel bTV on September 28 2010.
The discussion was made in relation to Europe 2020, a strategy which is poised for a sustainable and inclusive growth of European Union member states. The Europe 2020 strategy was put forward by the Commission and this sets out a vision of Europe's social market economy for the 21st century.
In this regard, Dyankov said that the objective for Bulgaria is to improve its infrastructure, to improve on its education and ensure that its youth will be competitive in the international market, and that it will achieve "
the best business environment in the whole EU"
.
He also said that a primary objective is for Bulgarian Government institutions to become "
trustworthy"
.
"
This is how Bulgaria will finally become an equal member in the European Union,"
he said.
Countries in the EU are facing high unemployment, sluggish structural growth and excessive debt levels of debt in the wake of the most severe recession since the 1930s. According to the European Commission website, the economic situation is improving, but the recovery is still fragile. At the same time, the world is moving fast and long-term challenges – "
globalisation, pressure on resources, climate change, ageing – are intensifying"
.
