Dictionary Presents New Words in Bulgarian Language

The Institute for Bulgarian language at the National Academy of Sciences has developed a dictionary for the new words in the Bulgarian language.

"
The dictionary that we present is a mirror of the contemporary life, of every new word that enters every field of life. About 3000 are the new words, with 700 being old words with a new meaning,"
said Emiliya Pernishka, one of the authors of the dictionary.

The new dictionary will consist of new words that have been used in at least three different publications since 1989. The previous edition was published in 2001 and it covered the period 1990-2000.

"
The new version of the dictionary includes words that have been chosen from among 30,000,"
said Diana Blagoeva, one of the authors.

She has explained that a special electronic body was used for extracting more than 7000 texts in digital format, including 240 million words.

The used texts were extracted from print editions, fiction, non-fiction and science-fiction literature. The dictionary features spelling, grammar, stylistic notes and interpretation of the lexical units of the words.

"
We had the opportunity to use more objective criteria when deciding whether a word is new. Some of them are also marked with an "
undesirable"
note. It refers to foreign words, which could be replaced by Bulgarian ones,"
Blagoeva said.

The authors have explained that many of the new words are connected to new administrative events or professional activities, like monitoring, bodyguard, dealer, supervisor, distributor, auditor, image maker.

Terms, connected to economics, like off shore, cash, franchising, featuring, smart card, PR, are separated in another group.

According to Sia Kokovska, one of the authors, the fastest growing vocabulary is the one of the computer sciences field.

"
In the last 20 years we saw an avalanche of words like file, driver, domain, blog, facebook, laptop, CD, DVD,"
she said.

The dictionary also includes words that have not yet entered actively the every-day language of Bulgarians. Blagoeva pointed out as an example the word "
nomophob."

"
Nomophob is a person, who is afraid to be left without a mobile phone. It comes from English – no mobile,"
she explained.

The authors believe that the dictionary will be useful to people who are not fluent in English, as well as to older people, who do not know most of the new words in the contemporary language in Bulgaria.
