The news was reported Saturday by Darik radio. The injured children have been taken by an emergency room ambulance to the hospital in the regional center of the city of Kardzhali. The blast occurred while the children were trying to make a homemade explosive device. What are these people doing allowing children to play with such stuff !!! it makes me mad when I think about it [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

Death Toll in Bulgarian Orphanage Blast Rises to 3
Three boys, ages 13, 15 and 16, died Saturday when a homemade bomb exploded in an orphanage in the southern Bulgarian town of Krumovgrad.
The device went off around 2 pm. One of the boys died on the scene while the other has been taken to the Krumovgrad hospital where he later died. A third boy was listed in critical condition in the hospital in the regional center the city of Kardzhali, and died during surgery.
Police arrived shortly after the blast and found remains from a homemade explosive. It is still unclear if the children were trying to make the bomb or it came from outside and exploded while the boys were handling it.
Forensic experts and members of the anti-terrorist task force are searching the location while psychologists are helping the other children cope with the tragedy. The Social Minister, Totyu Mladenov, his deputy, Valentina Simeonova, and the Director of the State Agency for Child Protection, Nadya Shabani, are on their way to Krumovgrad.
This is so very sad |

| I've just read this and it's bought tears to my eyes [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I think that this is absolutely disgusting and I don't know why the people who run the orphanage could let this happen, what is wrong with this carers? don't they care about the children? I can't understand how the children were able to make it or find it in the grounds of the orphanage surely there was a carer with them? I just hope that the Director of the State Agency for Child Protection can do something right out of this terrible tragedy. I am deeply saddened by this story and I hope nothing like this happens again. |

| This is truly appalling it makes you wonder what is going on in some of these orphanages I'm sure there will be an enquiry but then brushed under the carpet and forgotten, I have met many Bulgarians during my many visits to Bulgaria and they are mostly very good people but when you read something like this it has to beg the question why???? And how? It seems to me that all some of these sp called careers are interested in is how much they can get for as little a possible responsibility, I'm sure if we are able to follow this story we will never know the outcome which is very sad, I would suggest that someone like oddy writes to the minister responsible and asks for a full public enquiry |

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Like everyone esle I am totally heart broken and to be honest really annoyed that yet more children have to suffer and for what ??? Why is it always the children who suffer They must have been following instructions form adults somewhere, even if it was an experiment that went wrong - why were they allowed to handle such dangerous products. There has to be more to it than stated. Oddy |

| Yes I think your right Bernie there must be more to this story than we have read so far but I wonder as said above how much of the truth will we actually get to know? its very sad in this day and age that in some countries we take life for granted and think is ok to do this sort of thing? maybe you are right and it was supervised and something has gone terribly wrong but there is no mention of any adults being injured so I do wonder? it just amazes me that these children were able to get hold of the required chemicals etc to be able to do this? I look back at a program I watched not so long ago that was produced by Kate Blewett and I do remember that the care on that program was next to nothing [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I just hope that something is learnt from this but will they ever learn I will try and find out more as and when it becomes available but I'm not so sure it will??????? |

Bulgaria's Krumovgrad to Mourn Death of 3 Kids
The southern Bulgarian town of Krumovgrad will declare next week a day of mourning over the death of three boys, who were killed in a homemade bomb explosion.
The exact date will be penciled in after the autopsy of the victims' bodies is completed at the nearby town of Kardzhali, mayor Sebihan Mehmed announced.
The victims Dzhingiz Rushen (13), and Sunay Keazim (16) are from the nearby villages of Pelin and Zimornitsa, while the third killed boy Dzhingiz Dzhemal (15) was born in the village of Sokolinovo, close to the southern border town of Momchilgrad.
The orphanage did not have security guards, which according to the mayor is a wide-spread practice, aiming to provide more serene environment for the children in the institution.
Forensic experts and members of the anti-terrorist task force are still scouring the site of the blast while psychologists are helping the other children cope with the tragedy.
Bulgaria Arrests Four over Deadly Orphanage Blast
Four people will be arrested a day after a homemade bomb exploded in an orphanage in the southern Bulgarian town of Krumovgrad, killing three boys.
The director of the orphanage Svetoslav Daynov and another three servants there are expected to be detained on Sunday at the order of district prosecutor Svetlozar Lazarov.

| This is also very sad I can't think why children would be allowed to play with such things, I know we don't have the whole story but it should never have happened from what I know Bulgarians take great care of their animals for their food, so why not afford the same care to the children ?? I do hope that these people will learn from this although its now too late for the 3 that have died this is so upsetting thanks Ashley for bringing this to our attention and I hope you get a reply from the minister saying that there will be a public inquiry

Suicide Attempt Follows Deadly Blast in Bulgaria
he main suspect for the deadly blast at an orphanage in the southern town of Krumovgrad has attempted to commit suicide a day after the tragedy, which killed three children, according to reports.
The 54-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed, is currently hospitalized with a stab wound in his stomach.
No official charges have been raised yet against the man, who operates the local heating utility at the orphanage. He is said to have been a close friend of the children and is believed to have given them a detonator from a military mine by mistake.

Military Mine Blamed for Deadly Blast at Bulgarian Orphanage
A detonator from a military mine is most likely to have caused the explosion at an orphanage in the southern town of Krumovgrad, which killed three children, prosecutors say.
The explosive device most probably is a detonator from a military mine, which the children received from a servant at the orphanage, District Prosecutor Svetlozar Lazarov told Darik Radio.
In his words the clues, collected by investigators, are pointing at the man, who is in charge with the local heating utility, as the main culprit.
According to unconfirmed reports the man has attempted to commit suicide a day after the tragedy and is currently hospitalized with a stab wound in his stomach.
The device went off around 2 pm on Saturday, killing three teenagers. One of the boys died on the scene while the other has been taken to the Krumovgrad hospital where he later died. A third boy was listed in critical condition in the hospital in the regional center the city of Kardzhali, and died during surgery.

New Update
Another Two Arrests over Fatal Krumovgrad Explosion
Two more people have been arrested in connection with the tragic incident in the southern Bulgarian town of Krumovgrad, where an improvised bomb killed three youngsters at a children's home.
This brings the number of detentions following Saturday's incident, to six. One of the latest to be arrested is the son of the heating maintenance engineer at the home, and the other has been described as a friend of his.
An arsenal of various explosives has been discovered at their home. Investigators have been trying to establish the reason for keeping them there.
The director of the social home, Svetoslav Dayov, was detained last night for 24 hours, but this period will be extended for a further 72 hours, according to the regional prosecutor Svetozar Lazaro, as he is charged with causing death by negligence of more than one person.
The others already arrested are two female supervisors at the home and the stoker Hamdi, who had earlier tried to commit suicide.
Hamdi was taken to hospital in Kardjali and was in a stable condition, after stabbing himself in the stomach with a pocket knife.
Earlier today, Minister of Labor and Social Policy Totyu Mladenov had said that there was evidence that Hamdi had given the children some small things which they had taken into the home.
It was also known that he had friendly relations with the three teenagers, who had often helped him, and to whom he had paid small sums of money, he said.
" Control in the home is not bad. We will send letters to all mayors in the country to improve the control of those who enter into those homes," he emphasized.
The small town of Krumovgrad is in shock after Saturday's tragedy in which one youth died on the spot and two others died of serious injuries hospital.
The three have been named as Dzhingiz Rushen (13), Sunay Keazim (16), and Dzhingiz Dzhemal (15).
Once autopsies have been completed, a week of mourning will be declared in Krumovgrad. |
