Bulgarian Capital Shuts Major Route to Sofia Airport for Repairs

he Sofia Municipality is closing down the Brussels Boulevard – the major road to the Sofia International Airport – for repairs until late December.

The municipal authorities are undertaking rehabilitation of the bridge on which the Brussels Blvd is located from July 30 until December 18, 2010.

The traffic to and from Terminals 1 and 2 of the Sofia International Airport that usually takes will be redirected to the Christopher Columbus Blvd, which runs on a lower level bellow the Brussels Blvd.

Will this add to the time taken travelling from the coach/train station? Are there likely to be hold-ups?

Used the route 2 weeks ago going to the airport and on Thursday coming back. Sorry but the route is hopeless Lack of signs, so a touch of guess work is required. It took us about half to three quarters of an hour to get to the main Road and this was at Mid day. The Bulgarian mad drivers don't help as I even got cut up standing still in a traffic jam, the idiot went past most people at about 40MPH then just cut in with no gap to cut into, madness when they said brains he got drains ha ha.

I would advise adding at least half an hour to your journey time, unless it is really early or late.

Just spoken to a couple of my friends who did this last week and they also said allow about another half hour hope this helps you

I did this trip with no delays but I think it was more good luck than good management Lol

From Terminal 2 I went straight over the traffic lights, instead of going left, stay on that road and after about 1 mile you join another road at a Y junction (Bloody awkward in a RHD) but anyway bear right, follow that road for another mile and then pick up the sign for Ruse (Pyce) it joins the dual carriageway just before the OMV garage near their equivalent of Toys are us. Sorry I dont know the street names, but my sat nav had me taking the exit after Toys are Us to go about 6 miles to the airport when I was going to collect the wife, that little error on the way back saved 6 miles on the journey Lol

Wow thanks for the quick responses. Thankfully I won't be driving but taking a taxi to the airport from a central hotel and then back again from the airport to the coach station. I will allow extra time which I guess will also mean extra cost! Thanks again folks.
