Bulgarian Coastal Power Outage to Be Fully Fixed by Weekend

Crews of the Bulgarian National Electric Company (NEK) are continuing round-the-clock work to fix the two serious breakdowns of its electric posts, which left some Black Sea coast resorts without electricity.

It is expected that the major part of the power supply will be restored Saturday and power will be restored in full by the end of the weekend.

The temporary restraining power regime remains in effect for the area north of the Black Sea city of Burgas where the schedule is to have power for one hour and then interrupt it for one hour. The restrictions are carried out in accordance with the Energy Act, and are needed to prevent new power outages over the now increased demand during the tourist season. It is expected that the regime will be reinforced until the end of the day Saturday when the larger of the two damaged posts will be fixed. The works have, however, been hindered by the heavy rains in the area.

As far as the second post is concerned, NEK say their inspection showed the damage had been, most likely, triggered by a theft attempt or sabotage.

An additional 40 police officers will guard Bulgaria’s largest coastal resort “Sunny Beach,” Energy Minister, Traicho Traikov, informs. He met Friday with hotel owners and tour operators who have been affected by the outage and visited the areas of damage.

20 other police officers will guard the resort town of Nessebar.

Traikov promised the tourist business that power will be fully restored by the end of the weekend.

Tourists Leave Bulgarian Beach Resort over Power Outage

Scores of foreign tourists at Bulgaria’s largest Black Sea resort “Sunny Beach” are asking for cancellations and compensations of their vacation stay.

The reason for the request is the mass power outage in a number of resorts in the country’s southern Black Sea cost that began Friday.

The President of the Union of “Sunny Beach” hotel owners, Elena Yordanova, says the resort currently has about 300 000 holidaymakers and a large number have left ahead of the planned end of their vacation over the lack of electric power and, consequently, air conditioning and hot water.

Meanwhile, the Russian daily “Komsomolskaya Pravda” published an article, mocking the country for the problem and saying: “Don’t forget to pack candles if are planning to on vacation in Bulgaria.”

The latest update from the Bulgarian National Electric Company (NEK), which owns the two damaged posts, is that power will be restored by 2 pm Saturday.

Bulgarian Black Sea Cost Power Outage Tamed

Crews of the Bulgarian National Electric Company (NEK) were able to fix at 1:40 pm Saturday the two serious breakdowns of its electric posts, which left some Black Sea resorts without electricity.

The temporary restraining power regime for towns and resorts near the southern Black Sea city of Burgas has been lifted.

The two breakdowns left since Thursday evening several resorts along the coastline without power, air conditioning and hot water, prompting many tourists to cancel and alter vacation plans. 120 workers were blocked in a coal mine near Burgas.

Bulgaria Introduces Electricity Restrictions in Top Black Sea Resorts

Some 300 000 tourists, mostly foreign, will be affected by electricity supply restrictions introduced Friday night along Bulgaria’s Southern Black Sea coast.

After a number of recent power outages in the sea resorts around the city of Burgas, the EVN power utility has made it clear that the record consumption of electricity in the region has been pushing to its limits the local power grid.

The introduced electricity supply restrictions will provide for one hour without electricity for every five hours with proper electricity supply. The measure will be in place until the power consumption in the region is reduced.

The restrictions will affect all coastal resorts and town north of the city of Burgas, including Bulgaia’s largest resort Sunny Beach, which features about 150 hotels.

Data from EVN has show that there was record electricity consumption along the Southern Black Sea coast Thursday night, which amounted to about 1/5 of the capacity of Bulgaria’s Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant.

Only in the Sunny Beach resort, the consumption amounted to 163 MW. The consumption in the packed hotel complexes there does not go below 80 MW even at night because of the constantly working air conditioning systems.

The decision to introduce electricity supply restrictions in some of Bulgaria’s most popular resorts has come after the Sunny Beach resort and the town of Pomorie saw a power outage for half an hour Thursday night, shortly after 8 pm, when most tourists in the packed complexes were having dinner.

Ivan Yotov, Director of Bulgaria's Electricity System Operator, a government company in charge of operational planning and control of the country's electricity supply, had announced Friday morning that there was a high probability of introducing scheduled restrictions of electricity supply in the Sunny Beach region as a result of the tremendous consumption of electric power.

In July, a similar power outage that lasted almost 48 hours hit the Sunny Beach resort leading scores of foreign tourists to leave. The Bulgarian institutions have started an investigation of the blackout but have not announced their final findings yet even though at some point a minister revealed suspicions of “malicious damage.” The investigation is now focused on the state company NEK.

The EVN provider has promised to employ additional emergency teams in order to fix as quickly as possible any new power failures caused by the collapsing grid.

Bulgaria’s National Electric Company NEK has announced that it has started to replace the power lines along the Black Sea coast in order to avoid future blackouts. However, only the power grids along the northern part of coast will be replaced at first.

NEK officials have blamed the problems with the power supply of the Southern Black Sea coast not just on the excessive consumption caused by the hot weather but also on the overdevelopment of resorts such as Sunny Beach and the complete lack of strategy on part of the local owners and communities for the proper development and capacity of the power grid in the region.

well.well doesnt this just show the ineptness off the management ofthese companies.Surely if information is passed to them at the early planning stages calculations can be made plus contingency plans towards what is going to be the basic supply of electric needed.
Its not a new thing thats just been invented (electricity).

Perhaps a good job that approx 80% of the apartments there are empty at the moment. It could be a lot worse. It amazes me that developers are allowed to build all these apartments without adequate provisions for infrastructure, drainage and services. In the winter some apartment blocks need a boat to get to them as there is no drainage. The Vlas villa zone is like a river down to the road when the snow melts. If only the owners could see what goes on in the winter.

What has the biggest income to the Black Sea Resorts. Tourists. So the best way to attract more is to cut off the electricity is it not. Of course the Bulgarian Inland Revenue are losing money hand over fist because they cannot get the retailers to submit proper tax returns therefore why don't they put that house in order.

In fact most of this is total nonsense as it is more economical to run the Power Stations at high output. It is more cost effective to run generators with high demand than low demand. An old saying is a lift does not know that it is Saturday. Plus there is more income from the sale of the product. In the UK because the Generators run idle at night we are encouraged to use a night time rate remember economy 7. What total nonsense. Is EVN a Bulgarian Company no, so maybe not just the Bulgarians that should shoulder the blame. I think EVN are French so maybe they should be putting some of the profit back into the infrastructure as well. Bulgarian electricity is the highest priced in Europe I think.

Your going a bit :OffTopic:but maybe the thing to remember here is that EVN is not a Bulgarian company. But it is the Bulgarian Government that set the rules on the contracts Bulgaria Introduces Electricity Restrictions 794030042

Storks Said to Spoil Electricity Supply of Bulgarian Resorts

Different parts of Bulgaria's Southern Black Sea coast, including both resort complexes and residential quarters, had restricted electricity supply overnight.

This occurred after Friday night electricity supply restrictions in the Burgas region were introduced as a result of the constant power outages caused by the excessive consumption in the crowded resorts, especially Sunny Beach.

The electricity supply restrictions have not been formally announced but the EVN power utility has made it clear that the state electricity company has ordered it to reduce the supply because of the collapsing power grid.

Large flocks of storks are also reported to have contributed to the power supply of Sunny Beach and the other resorts near Burgas because the storks often sit on the problematic power lines.

A huge flock of storks was noticed above the Sunny Beach resort Saturday morning.
