Beach-goers in Bulgaria Warned of Dangerous Sea Waters

Monday, August 2 is considered in Bulgaria the one day during the year when the waters of the Black Sea are the most dangerous, taking the most drowning victims.

Under the Gregorian Calendar, on August 2 the Orthodox Church marks St. Elijah's Day (Ilinden), but the Bulgarian oceanography experts point out the drowning incidents are not a simple superstition and are due to the so-called ground-sea-swell, which is common for the beginning of August and is due to a cold northern wind.

The phenomenon is extremely dangerous because when it occurs in coastal waters there are no obvious signs to help detect it.

The Bulgarian lifeguards warn all beach-goers Monday to observe the warning signs and their directions and to not swim in deep waters.
