Hi all,
I'm not sure if or how this would work but what about having a topic solely for things we have tried in BG.
Like what cheeses to avoid, what sausages taste nice or not,
is there anything you have tried or bought from supermarkets which is particular good or bad what ever the case is.

Personally at first I avoided eating the fish here because I didn't know what it tasted like but since then we have eaten quite a lot of treska which is Cod basically and always found it really nice.

Rice- after trying so many difference packets of rice and them all being so stodgy we came across a golden rice which is great it's not sticky or stodgy at all and makes perfect everytime.

Just anything people have tried then tell us about it.
Anyway just a thought

Hi Jenny :Good post:I tried quite a few things while I was in Bulgaria including something called Butter fish which was amazing it even had a sort of buttery taste, as for rice this wasn't really a problem, I found some in Kaulfland that came in box's which was basmati rice and had about 5 servings for around 2.5 Lv, now we get to cheese, what can I say :Shocked:I tried all of them and even tried mixing them when cooking but the one thing I noticed is they all lacked taste of any sort or they seemed to have a taste that I didn't like? but none of it to me ever tasted like cheese as I know it, I will have a think and come back I'm sure I could write more here g

There is such a diversity of food in Bulgaria some good and some not so good to the British palette I have tried the Butter fish that netsniper has mentioned and its very good although maybe a little bony for me, now when it comes to sausages now thats a different matter I love most of their sausage but unfortunately I can't remember the name of my favorite I will get in touch with my mate and maybe he will tell me and I'll come back and tell you all

The frozen pastry (бутер тесто) is available just about all places, even the little stockies. Very good value and really versatile.

We use it for making:
Cornish Pasties
Chicken, Leek and Cheese Pasties
Minced beef and onion pies

Cheers

Got my answer the sausage I most like in Bulgaria is called Lukanka Sausage not quite sure how to write in in Cyclic though my friend in Bulgaria has managed to translate the ingredients and they are as follows its a dry-cured sausage thats flattened made with pork, beef, veal, black pepper, cumin, salt, and fenugreek, and I love this with anything if you haven't tried it then give it ago Must try's ?? 511078427

There are lots of nice foods in Bulgaria which I like and for me my dish would be Kyuvech which is stewed lamb and big chunks of vegetables this is so delicious and if you can stomach it goes down well with Rakia, the dish I don't like one bit is Baked cabbage its a dish that Bulgarian seem to eat more often in the winter, and for me it smells awful

The same company that does the pastry also do a ready made Pizza dough which is yummy.
You just defrost it unroll it I use the Lutanitsa for the tomato topping then little bit cheese my toppings
and bake for 18-10 mins hey presto perfect pizza.

Also there is sausages in Kaufland that are in a clear tray with 5 sausages approx 9 inches in length and they look as if they have herbs in them, they taste like a cross between Lincolnshire sausage and a Cumberland sausage. they cost around the 5 leva mark for the pkt.

For anyone that likes risotto the boxes of ready made easy risotto rice is yummy especially the Mushroom one.
You just add water and cook.

yes Daisy I have to say it is an aquired taste, We usually get it at pig killings where is is stewed cabbage with paprika mixed through and pieces of pork and fat baked in the oven.
One thing I would definitely avoid at all costs is the Bahar which is their version of Black Pudding but without the use of the blood it's nothing but a mouthful of grizzle and fat yuk yuk yuk lol.

Yes indeed there are some lovely foods available the pork is so tender. Chicken is fab. I noticed there is no water from the meats either. The salads are wonderful and so is the feta cheese, but could not eat the cheese on it's own. Feta is by far the best cheese we have found, but this year we found Edam g The small individual sponge cakes are just fab, s so light and tasty g Yum!

Oops!!!!!!!! nearly forgot the walnuts wonderful H

I know British Lion Food Store sells real Fagot's in Gravy ... I can remember adding them when I built the web site!

Having said that, they're really easy to make and all the ingredients are readily available here.
