If you are going to the Sandanski region is it a reasonable idea to fly to Thessalonika in Greece and travel up over the border?

Or is it better to fly to Sofia?

Hi Judy I've done both and to be honest I can't really say which one was better they both have their advantages I found the driving from Greece fantastic as far as scenery was concerned but I found the flight to Sofia and the the drive boring I think it's a case of what you prefer?

Have to agree driving through Europe really is fantastic We just loved it and I am not much good as a traveler but had not problems at all. But must admit flying is best for me

Are there any problems or specific requirements crossing the border?

I drove from France, through Italy, down to Bari, ferry across to Greece, up into Sandanski. No problems at any border and no problems with the dog, finding accommodation, etc.

They did charge me two leva for the 'privilege' of driving through a muddy puddle full of Domestos to 'disinfect' our wheels! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

We had not problems what so every Judy - You start to buy the road tax in Hungary and then in Romania and then in Bulgaria. Customs in Romania stopped us had a little look at the jeep papers and welcomed us then sent us on our way.

:: of ours who live in Sandanski, have had family come over, and they have flown to Greece and then they have driven down to pick them up.My family has always flown to Sofia. If you are going to fly to Greece, then hire a car to drive yourself I would let the car rental place know in advance that you are going to Bulgaria,. it may cost a bit more I don't know.
