Aegean cancels without warning all flights between Sofia, Athens
Greek carrier Aegean Airlines has cancelled all flights between Athens and Sofia without issuing a preliminary warning to its passengers. Customers of the airline were only made aware of the decision once at the airport, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said on April 1 2010.
Dnevnik quoted Sofia Airport officials saying that the change had happened "
several days ago"
, yet Aegean apparently never notified its customers. It was assumed that the flights would be serviced by Olympic Air, which merged with Aegean in February, although this also remains unconfirmed.
The merger is yet to be approved by the European Commission, a decision expected in September 2010. The main shareholders of the two operators have reached an agreement, however, with the new corporate entity keeping the Olympic Air name and brand.
Still, "
the responsibility for the passengers to remain informed of such drastic decisions falls on Aegean and not Olympic. It is up to them to organise the transfer of flights for passengers who have already reserved their seats towards our company. Once this is done, we will assume it from there,"
Olympic said in a media statement, quoted by Dnevnik.
Aegean Airlines' website did not contain any information on the cancellation of flights between Sofia and Athens, which the airline launched in April 2006.
