PostSubject: Bulgarian Name Days   Bulgarian Name Days Icon_minitimeWed Mar 24, 2010 10:40 pm

Bulgarian Name Days are the Bulgarian expression of a custom practised in most countries in which the Eastern Orthodox or Greek Orthodox religion is the official denomination.

A Name Day is a day of the year set aside on the calendar of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church to celebrate the name and life of a certain Saint. Everyone named after that specific saint has cause for celebration, somewhat similar to a large scale birthday.

Some name days are associated with certain specific traditions. For example, on St. Nick's Day a stuffed carp has to be cooked and served at dinner, while on St. George's Day a lamb must be prepared.

Even though name days in general are usually associated with saints in Bulgaria some of them are in honour of important figures from the history of Bulgaria.

Some common name days:

* St. Cyril and Metodi's (Methodius's) Day.
* Vasil's Day
* Ivan's Day
* St. Georgi's (George's) Day

Name days in Bulgaria are associated almost always with Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox celebrations. Some names can be celebrated on more than one day and some have even started following foreign traditions (like Valentina being celebrated on the Catholic St. Valentine's Day). Name days in Bulgaria are important and widely celebrated. By an ancient Bulgarian tradition, everybody is welcome on name days;
there is no need to invite guests. Presents are given. Common well-wishes include "
may you hear your name from grandchildren and great-grandchildren"
, "
may you hear your name only in good things"
and "
may your name be healthy and well"
.

Just a reminder that May 6th is St Georges Day which is a big day here in Bulgaria. Our village will be celebrating with a church service, our choir singing songs about Gergiovden and the traditional lamb soup given to all the villagers. Is your village celebrating? s

Our village needs very little excuse to celebrate - I am sure many others are the same!!!!

Loads of relatives come for the weekend from Yambol and Burgas. We are normally the only young'uns here so it is party time this weekend!!!!

St Georges Day is one of the more important dates in Bulgaria. It is for shepherds and fertility and there are various rites associated with the day. The traditional lamb sacrifice is part of it either roasted or, as in our village, a soup. There will be parades in the town of Veliko Turnovo. Houses will have green foliage tied to a gate and the women usually carry a posy of the geranium plant on the way to church. I hope the weather gets better and this rain goes away. The village has been strimmed and usually we sing outside and the children also take part with rehearsed poems and little speeches.There will be flower decorations too. If its wet, I guess it will be in the Community hall, but in 7 years we have been here it has always been held in the church grounds which is also traditional.
Enjoy in your village anyway whatever the weather. s

Oldun - You sound like the type of chilled out person who will enjoy the festivities whatever the weather.

Let's hope it's good though.
