Insuring a British plated Car Empty
PostSubject: Insuring a British plated Car   Insuring a British plated Car Icon_minitimeTue Feb 02, 2010 2:37 pm

Hello,
I have a British plated 2.0l 4x4 that we drove over here. Do to the size of the car and my age it is very expensive for me to keep the car on my British insurance policy. I read through the "
Bulgarian Law on Insuring a Vehicle in Bulgaria"
Sticky and got my question answered, "
Yes i can get fully comp insurance here for a forign car"
but now i dont know where. I userstand you probably dont like company names being plastered all over you forum, but if someone could point me in the right direction it would be most helpfull.

Ive got all the documents and a valid MOT certificate just for the records.

kind regards, Matt

Hi Matt first of all as far as links are concerned to help members there isn't a problem we just don't want spammers on here, anyway not too sure if I can help or not but what I will say is I took my British reg Pajero to Bulgaria and I insured it without any problem however once I changed to Bulgarian registration it became a lot cheaper, I think it’s a case of fishing round to see what companies will offer, Chris may be able to help with this or oddball

Cheers
And good luck :Winky

Hi Matt

Netsniper is right ... much better to get it on BG plates (your legally obliged to reregister it anyways if you're resident here).

You'll get a better rate with BG plates and will get stopped far less by the Police!

Cheers

Thanks for the responses. I have been told that there are quite large costs/taxes involved in getting a 2.0l 4x4 transfered onto BG plates. Is this true?

Netsniperthefirst, was your insurance the 6 months third party insurance from the post office or did you get a more comprehensive policy elsewhere?

Cheers, Spektral

Hi spektral

The tax is governed by engine size. I actually bought my Pajero here in Bulgaria, so didn't go through the process myself so can't tell you an accurate figure.

I'll try and find out the actual scale of tax per engine size for you and post it here if I do!

Hi spektral

This is what I found:

"
EU/EEA citizens do not need to pay import duty on a used car that they have owned for over six months and driven 6,000 Km prior to entry in Bulgaria. Owners of cars brought from outside the EU/EEA will need to pay import duty on the vehicle. "

Thats great thanks. Looks like it wont cost me much at all!

For anyone else looking into this there is an "
Eco-Tax"
to be paid on older cars:

"
Eco-tax
An environmental tax called eco-tax (Еко такса) must be paid for all cars imported from outside the EU. The amount paid depends on the age of the vehicle;
it applies to all vehicles. This tax must also be paid for all cars over ten years old imported from an EU/EEA country."

The more i read on the internet the more confused i get! There is conflicting information everywhere.

My conclusion is that unless you have a car with a powerful engine 135kw you pay minimal tax to register. There is mention here and elsewhere that the law changed on the 1st Jan 2010 removing this tax and replacing it with another

[url=/traveling-in-bulgaria-and-vehicle-related-information-f4/ecotax-cars-from-january-1-2010-t414.htm][You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Once registered i need to have/pay:

BG Plates
yearly insurance (can be obtained from KAT when registering the car?)
yearly tax at my local municipality in march
yearly road tax (vignette)
yearly MOT (once my UK one has expired)

I am going to start looking into the process soon. I will post how I get on here.

Hi Guys

We drove Dougie's Pajero 2.5 disel over to BG in 2008. We got the 6 months tax on it here and the insruance was until the following year , but we could also use the vehicle up to 90 days abroad , Mot was due in around same time as the tax.

No problem you say: Well we left the vehicle in BG We had the 90 days insurance cover next tme we went over and we could tax with the Vinetta. Sounds good you say: hum However, the MOT had run out and we could not MOT a UK car in BG so with no MOT so effectively the UK insurance was not valid plus we could not renew the tax as we had no UK MOT. swings and roundabouts

Then the insurance company said you have to have a valid uk tax and mot otherwise you are not insured, a tax/mot certificate from another country will not make your vehcile legal.

So we were stuck, we could not use the jeep unless we had it tax and mot and insured Dougie managed to get EU cover and a kind of inspection like a mot and a vinetta at a cost of £249 for 4 weeks.

We tried everything we could but because we are not residents in BG we could not regisitar the Jeep and the only way to do this was via the company, as they would not registar it an individuals name Dougie and the translator were all but thrown out of the KAT office.

It is all done now tax mot insurance. The import/immission tax cost us just under £300 But what a nightmare - if you do decide to take a car over make sure you have the residency cards first.

Oddy
