Hi

Can anyone advise for our prospective move to BG?

We have fully comprehensive car insurance in UK and our current policy dies not cover us in EU as we would no longer be residing in UK when ewe move. Can anyone suggest/provide suitable insurance companies/procedures that we can get insurance for the drive over and cover once we arrive until we register the car after 3 months once we have our lichna carta.

There are many ways to do this. AA, RAC are but 2, plus you get the added breakdown cover across Europe. Your UK bank can also arrange cover depending on what type of account you have and of course on the bank itself.

Once here I would use HDI. I've been with them for over 6 years and no problems. It is said that that Insurance is only as good as they claims they pay out on, well I've claimed twice and had no problems. In fact it could be 3 times that I have claimed but it was them that insisted on me having a new windscreen. g

Our bank insures our car, and on it it states there is a sixty day EU cover. Does that apply even if you have no UK address as we will be giving up our rental before we leave? Anyone else used this? It is not clear whether it covers you if you are actually moving abroad.

If it was me, I would move a few days before the rental in UK finished, then you still have a UK address, cancel the insurance from in Bulgaria

i agree with wills666 we cancelled ours from bulgaria once we moved, it was the easiest way to do it. or alternatively change your insurance address to a uk family member, so the insurance has a current address while you get here and get it changed. s

Bear in mind if you make an alteration to your insurance they will automatically charge you £25 administration charge. I had two day to go on my insurance and rang them to change over my car - they were very happy to do this than said there will be an admin charge - Needless to say I said no thanks and will wait until I actually have to change over. So going to BG a week or so before the due date will give you time to sort out insurance but then you may come across another problem - trying ot insure a UK car we did this and it cost us £250 for a month so be very careful.

As Bernie said above..insuring a vehicle with UK plates WILL be expensive, but it is possible. I had mine changed to BG plates as quickly as I could and have had no problems since. The wisdom which sometimes comes with hindsight would have me buying a vehicle here, already documented and plated for Bulgaria, if I were to repeat the exercise. Over the last six years living here as I do, I've changed vehicles for various reasons, but have only purchased those which are already on the BG data base..two or three hours of 'phaffing' about and all was well and legal. Insurance is a walk in the park after that.

Am I correct in thinking that it is not to change vehicle plates until we get your lichna carta?

Sorry, I can't answer that because of your EU status..as I'm a real alien in this country, a few things are a bit different. For the the first five years in Bulgaria, my lichna carta had to be renewed every year, therefore a vehicle registered in my name had to be reregistered every year as well..got around this by transferring the vehicle to our family company and all was well. Subsequent vehicles have been registered the same way and this process has proven to be hassle free. One of the benefits of this particular system is that if I sell one of the above vehicles to someone who is buying in the name of his/her/their company, there is no need for the notary/declaration route..just a receipt with the company stamp.

Sorry for the long winded reply.

Many thanks BgBaz, hopefully someone who is from EU/UK will be able to shed some light on the subject.

Mr EQ

When we came over we had to register the car we brought in the Company name. But the rules have changed since then. So I hope that someone who has come over more recently can help Car insurance 1536469901

Found out that our current insurance covers us for 60 days in Europe, so once out in BG will cover us for 2 months. Effectively that will mean we will be car-less for 1 month unless we are able to get the car registered with BG plates and insured before the 90 day deadline when applying for residency.
