Bulgaria: Electronic road tax vignettes to be introduced

Oops! nearly forgot so I had better make a note to get the yearly road tax vignettes next week.

Would not rush,
1. They probably won't be in outlets until end of Dec
2. Current one is valid until end of Jan 2018 (check expiry date on white counterpart)

The period of validity of the annual vignettes will already be valid for a period of 1 year from the date of issue of the sticker, the government information service said.

The change in the period of validity of the annual vignette fee to be paid by all road vehicles from 1 January 2018 will apply to all motor vehicles, regardless of the category of the vehicle and the country in which it is registered.

This became clear after the government approved a decree amending the Ordinance on the conditions and procedure for collecting the charges for the use of road infrastructure under the Roads Act and the Tariff of Fees collected by the Road Infrastructure Agency.

Roadside Infrastructure Agency (API) pointed out for news.bg that the vignette stickers that were purchased in the current 2017 will be valid until January 31, 2018 - that is, the grace period for the purchase of a new vignette sticker will be valid 2018 years. Any vignette sticker purchased after 1 January 2018 will be valid for exactly one year of purchase - if the vignette is purchased on March 2, 2018, it will be valid until the same date of the next 2019 without a grace period.

With the changes from the beginning of the next calendar year, a vignette is introduced for a period of 3 months. It will also be valid for three calendar months from the date of issue. However, this vignette will only apply to vehicles under 3.5 tonnes.

The price of the new vignette sticker for 3 months will be 54 leva or 28 euro. When determining the price, the principle of proportionality is respected, ie the price of the three-month vignette is higher than the monthly and lower than the annual one, with respect to decreasing proportionality with increasing validity. This is required by the rule, the longer the period, the less the price paid.

There you go Berni....you are safe up until the end of January. Next year will be different though...they are talking about making the vignettes electronic, so we will need to pay close attention to how that is going to work.

Yep, you can relax Berni....I've been getting my vignettes from the the same place for the last 11 years and I called in there today and they told me they haven't received their new stock yet...expected in at the end of the month.

In Bulgaria, the sale of road vignettes for 2018 will begin as early as this Friday, December 22. There are some changes which will benefit drivers. The electronic vignette is not yet available, but it will be within two years, according to the Bulgarian authorities in charge.

Vignettes are required for any trips on Bulgarian roads, outside cities, towns and villages. This applies to the country’s motorways and rural roads, no matter how many potholes and craters they might have. Any vehicle without vignette will be fined.

Large gas stations all over Bulgaria offer vignettes for cars, larger vans and trucks. These are the types of vignettes offered, starting on Friday, for passenger cars:

> Weekly vignette: 15 leva

> Monthly vignette: 30 leva

> Three-month vignette (NEW): 54 leva

> Annual vignette: 97 leva

Apart from the new three-month vignette, there are also new rules, valid from January 1, 2018:

> Annual vignettes will be valid for one year, from the date of purchase. So far, they always expired on January 31, no matter when they were purchased.

> All other vignettes will also be valid from the date of purchase. Until now, drivers were allowed to choose the first day of validity.

At a press briefing in Sofia, the Bulgarian Minister of Regional Development, Nikolay Nankov, announced more than 2.1 million vignettes would be distributed now. Exactly 900,000 of them are annual vignettes for passenger cars, according to Nankov. All in all, 4.8 million vignettes will be offered for 2018.

The minister also stated the vignette design for 2018 had changed, in order to prevent forgery.

Until December 31, 2017, both the old and the new vignettes will be sold. From January 1, 2018, only the new ones are available.

Bit of head scratching needed to decipher that lot.

The message seems to be...buy the new 2018 vignette on the last day in January and it will be valid for exactly 12 months. Buy the new one now and it will be valid for 12 months from the date of purchase....the message seems to be; wait until the very last day of validity before you get a new one. In the past, I've always gone and purchased the four annual vignettes required just before New Year and fitted them at my leisure, sometime during the last week of January. If you are going to be away on holidays, or whatever, during Jan and/or Feb, buy one when you get back and ready to use the car again.

I interpret that the same as you do.
For us full-timers it will pay to wait until the end of Jan (expiry of current one) then purchase the new for a full 12 months
Those 'casual' visitors will benefit from the new shorter periods (I think)
