In sleep mode fan still running Empty
PostSubject: In sleep mode fan still running    In sleep mode fan still running Icon_minitimeThu Nov 16, 2017 7:51 am

Took my PC to the shop as the screen did not work, had to get a new screen but the shop man put a new battery in the clock/date section. Got home put the pc on and all was well, new monitor works well however, when I put the pc into sleep mode, it all turns off but the fan keeps running on and on so shounds like the pc is on all the time. I contacted the shop and he said this is not a problem just turn the pc off. Now this is silly can't keep doing that but he was not perpared for me to take it in again for him to sort so has not repsonded to my emails

On check on the google it appears to be a BIOS problem I have windows 7 so seem like it might be an easy fix if I did manage to get into BIOS but if I make a mistake I could fry the mother board Hot Hot Hot So in simple terms can anyone talk me though it please. A couple of points Berni, first the battery that was changed would have been the BIOS battery, which controls the date and time. Secondly is this a desktop or laptop, I would suspect laptop as you took the complete PC in. If a laptop do you mean sleep mode via the start menu or by closing the lid? If by closing the lid, I would check the power settings from the control panel and make sure that the option for when the lid is closed is to sleep and not do nothing.
Before making any changes to the BIOS on a PC that was previously running well there are other options that should first be examined.
Check for any software that may have been installed when the PC was not in your possesion, some independent repairers love to install things for their own reasons, also found via the control panel, if I remember correctly in Win7 the section called programs and features.
Does this happen if you wake the PC and then immediately go back to sleep, there was a problem with Win7 on some PC's when the first sleep did not work correctly but the second did. Also is this just in sleep or also in hibernate? Now that I have managed to beat my bain cells down to a managable level I can't remember the exact reason but a little research on the webnet would help

P.S. I forgot to mention (because I took it for granted that being a repair "professional" ) when the BIOS battery was changed it is normal practice that your repairman should have noted down the bios info before removing the battery and checked it again afterwards. What is the make and model of your PC?

Thanks for reply Si, yes it was the BIOS battery that he changed, Yes it is a desktop pc. Checked for any updates softwear and no, there was nothing but microsoft updates and nothing added on the 8th whilst at the shop. I turn on the pc in the morning and when I have checked what I needed to look at I press the sleep button the pc monitor goes off and the pc clicks as it too goes off but it sounds as if it is running all the time so looked it up on google and it said it's the fan not turning off and to changed the setting of the fan on BIOS. I checked all the power options and it is in sleep settings

Hi Berni,
OK, then you will need to check the BIOS settings, if the Bios battery is removed and there is no power to the PC then this will give a problem with CMOS which is simply a set of transistors that store your bios info.

You need to access your bios and note down all the settings then check these against the standard for your make and model

When you start your PC there should be a flash screen before windows starts with the manufacturors or the motherboard manufacturers logo.
On this screen there will be several messages such as press F1 for boot devices etc. the one you should be looking for is the key to press to enter setup eg. Press Esc for setup
This varies between manufacturers.
Once in setup (BIOS settings) note down all the values (the mouse will not work you will need to use the directional arrows, enter, tab, and normally Esc to leave)
When you leave there is always a message "are you sure you want to exit without saving" the answer when noting settings is always yes! This also gives a little security when changing something because if you think you may have made a mistake simply exit without saving

Good Luck

It depends upon your motherboard, on mine I think there are 5 settings from High perfomance to Silent with standard being in the middle. If the bios has been reset it would nomally default to standard. Higher performance will always make the CPU run hotter and the fan run harder.

You should also check that High temperature protection is turned on, this may be called Thermal overload or something else along the same lines. If this is temperature setting it would normally be about 65 to 70

If the fan speed is set at voltage or RPM please note this and post again

Just another thought, if your fan speed is set to your CPU temperature then the fan starting at a temp that is too low will mean that the fan will continue to run while in sleep, although sleep is low power the PC is still active and the CPU will be generating heat. In which case the temperature may be too high for the fan to cease.

In all cases it is worthwhile to open the side panel and check that the cooling fins on the heatsink for the CPU are not blocked with dust, you would be surprised how much they draw in, just don't touch any electronic componants with bare hands (static) and make sure the thing is unplugged for 10 minutes before opening.

I understand and agree with what GeshiSimon has said, but his last statement (above quote) would be the first step if you have not already got into the bios screen... also look to see if any of the small wires to and from the fan have not come into contact with the fan blades, or any other cables are lying across it. A hairdryer set on cold will do the job or one of those small electric airbed inflators. when moving towers about there is a lot of space for cables to shift location, so may have got lodged around moving parts. I blast mine through once a month,

If you have got into BIOS screen, go to the last tab on the right select that then select F9 - defaults settings - then F10-save changes and close.

Have a look at the below video and change the settings for plugged in to what you want. all you have to do then instead of closing down the PC or putting into sleep mode is turn the monitor off the PC will do the rest.
Personally, when I start in the morning I leave the PC running and turn off the monitor until retiring for the night

Well [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] AND [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] it is not as easy as I thought.  I thinks this is the bios but nothing on there to tell me how to alter setting to the fan.

You might find it under - POWER TAB
scroll down to - Hardware monitor, you might have to enable the feature, (click on the item you want to enable) if you are still unsure, do not make changes

Below video will outline, depends on motherboard, but basically similar.

if you want to try first on last page -Exit- click on load set up defaults then select save and exit

Well done g sometimes the simple things are best, That change has reset the motherboard to its basic set up OK for majority of users
there are some programmes that will help /assist
