Just thought i would pass a little information on.if you have an accident while driving on an Engish Licence, and it involves a penalty,ie points, they are unable to take points off your English Licence.a little differant to England a Bulgarian licence starts with points on it,if you have an incident then they take points off, when your at zero, your banned.anyway back to the point if you have an accident they cant do anything with your licence,so what they do is force you to get a Bulgarian licence,so they then can take the points off,i would also like to add that although its a straight swap its just for a basic licence,ie if you have a motorbike licence thats extra tests to upgrade, also to enable you to tow a trailer, extra test, this has happened to my wife,we are just in the process of getting her licence, believe me its a nightmare all the paperwork,so all you guys be careful.

That's brilliant information Mike thanks for that I'm sure there will be a few members who aren't aware of this fact I for one didn't know, in fact I didn't even know you had to take a test to tow a trailer, so well done and thanks

Wow this is something I didn't know either, so are you saying for example if you hold a uk HGV then it's not valid in Bulgaria? And if you hold various other licences it forklift truck and so on then you have to take your tests again

Hi Mike

I had my UK licence stolen and had to get a replacement BG licence. I have full car and bike entitlement, and this was switched directly to my Bulgarian licence without the need for any further tests.

I did have to get a 'certificate of entitlement' posted to me from the DVLA but no extra tests involved except a medical certificate and a certificate to say I wasn't mentally handicapped!

Cheers

A bit confusing this? but I think thats how it can be in Bulgaria one rule for one region and another for elsewhere? so I don't suppose there is a definitive answer

Yeah, I agree. When we lived in Sofia, the 'documents' I was supposed to provide were totally different to the documents that KAT in Sliven wanted.

Just been reading this and your right it it's very confusing to say the least it make me wonder how foreigners are suppose to know whats right and whats wrong? surely the law is the law no matter what part of Bulgaria you live in its all controlled by the same government I think its about time Bulgaria got it's act together in areas like this

Have a question i hope can be answered on this thread, is the Bulgarian license swap do they actually take your uk license off you and it gets surrendered, or do you end up with 2 Licenses. If its a swap i have an idea how you can keep both lol maybe post that idea later

Hi Marlyn

I believe that you have to surrender your UK licence if you wish to use a BG one.

Although in my case, I didn't have a choice as my UK one had been stolen!
