Tick Removal
A nurse discovered a safe, easy way to remove ticks where
they automatically withdraw themselves when you follow her
simple instructions. Read this one as it could save you from
some major problems.

Spring is here and the ticks will soon be showing their heads.
Here is a good way to get them off you, your children,
or your pets. Give it a try.

A School Nurse has written the info below--good enough
to share--and it really works!

"
I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best
way to remove a tick. This is great because it works in
those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with
tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of
dark hair, etc."

"
Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick
with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few
seconds (15-20);
the tick will come out on its own and be
stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.

This technique has worked every time I've used it
(and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic
for the patient and easier for me.."

Also, if you just pull a tick off, their heads sometimes break off
and are left under the skin so this is much safer. Be aware

also that a tick with a white speck on its back is a Deer
Tick, these can cause Tick Fever so check yourself and
your family good if you see any of these!

"
Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this
would be damaging in any way.
Please pass on. Everyone needs this helpful hint.

We live on the edge of a small village and our house is in a rural position. Farmers and locals walk all sorts of animals past our place and as a result ticks are abundant in hedgerows and grass and anything our dogs like to have a look at. As a result 3 of our 4 dogs have had ticks even after being treated with Frontline, we have got them out with the proverbial tweezers of course. But now with this momentous information from Oddy we will be using soap and a cotton ball in future, this will be far easier and more effective than the old method. Many thanks Berni for sharing this information.

We live in amongst a lot of animals, and our dogs had problems with ticks even when using frontline. We now buy Kiltex flea collars. They did the trick. They cost about 30levs and work for 7 months.

Just had a reply from an expert Dr Toshko Ljubomirov -  from the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research Sofia g

Dear Ashley,

The wasp on the picture is a member of family Scollidae,  but it is difficult to determine species and even genus because some main distinguishing characters are not visible – e. g. wing venation, antenna, head in front... Where the picture has been taken from?

Sincerely yours,

Toshko

The ticks are already out in force again this year (probably due to the warm but wet winter) so be warned!! We have just finished doing our daily tick check on our dogs and once again found a few of the horrible little things before they had become attached, so it is now out with the neem oil and time to apply it to their fur, it does not smell too good when on the dogs but it keeps the horrible ticks at bay.

We carry a small plastic tool we call a tick fork with us everywhere, simply to use and cheap to buy, we have used them for many years now. Our dogs seemed to have become immune to the Frontline product we were using. We contacted the company who after investigating the facts we provided to them could not find a reason why the product no longer actively worked with on our dogs. The neem oil we use has a better effect at deterring ticks/fleas than the product we used only downside to it is the smell when applied!

We visited the vets last week and purchased six lots of 10 - 20 kilos of tick amd flea repellent and three lots of 20 - 40 kilo repellent. The vet offered us the BG repellent or the more expensive Frontline, I informed him that Frontline may work on UK fleas, but most definitely doesn't work on BG fleas, much to his humour!

Oh my word Dougie took off his teeshirt today to go in the shower after strimming the garden and there was a TICK on his back yuch yuch yuch.... This is the first time we have seen one on humans, it was not that big. I had to get it off and I used the took we got from the vet, Slide in under the tick and twist, very easy everything removed completely. I just wondered how it got on his back his teeshirt was tucked in and his trousers tucked into his socks.... Will be check him every day now.
