| Partial Solar Eclipse to Mystify Bulgarian Horizon Jan 4
Bulgarian sky gazers will be treated to the rare spectacle of a partial eclipse of the sun, which will be visible from the territory of the country on January 4, 2011.
This will be the first partial solar eclipse visible from the Earth in the new year.
On the morning of Tuesday, January 4, 2011, an eclipse of the sun will be widely visible across Europe and as far east as India. The eclipse won't be visible in North and South America, however.
On January 4, the moon will gradually cover the sun, over a period of about 3 hours. At maximum, the eclipse will be at the horizon at sunrise in England, with 75% of the sun's diameter covered, and then gradually emerge over the next hour and 20 minutes. In Paris or Berlin, 80% of the sun will be covered near sunrise.
Farther east, the sun will be a bit higher in the sky at maximum, 22° high with 67% covered in Athens. In Israel and Egypt, the sun will be 33° high with over 55% coverage at maximum.
Because the sun is too bright to look at safely, scientists stress that special solar filters or projection methods should always be used to protect the eyes. |

| Bulgaria to see partial solar eclipse on January 4 2011 (weather depending)
A partial solar eclipse will be visible from Bulgaria on January 4 2011, according to the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, fully or partially obscuring the Sun from the point of view of the Earth. The January 4 2011 partial solar eclipse will be visible throughout Europe, North Africa and the northernmost parts of North America and Asia.
Seen from the Bulgarian capital city Sofia, the Sun will be 86 per cent obscured when the partial eclipse is at its maximum.
The event will begin at 7.57am Bulgarian time and will be at its maximum at 10.55am.
However, there is one crucial question – the weather, and the outlook is not good. According to bTV’s five-day weather forecast, January 4 will see snow and rain.
The January 4 partial solar eclipse will be at its most dramatic in northern parts of Europe – in Norway, Sweden, Finland and northern parts of Russia – where the Sun will be 92 per cent obscured.
Would-be observers are reminded not to look at the Sun under any circumstances without adequate protective shielding for the eyes.
Bulgarian admirers of full solar eclipses will have a long way to go and a long time to wait.
A full solar eclipse will be visible from Australia on November 13 2012, while – for just more than 11 minutes – a full solar eclipse will be visible from Sofia on September 3 2081. |

| Equinox solar eclipse on March 20 will partially seen in Bulgaria Bulgaria will see a partial solar eclipse on March 20, when the shadow of new moon will blot out about half the sun’s disc in late morning. In Sofia, the eclipse will begin at 10.42am local time, reaching a maximum at 11.50am and ending at 12.59pm. The first solar eclipse of this year will be seen over most of Europe, although only the total eclipse can be seen only on the remote northern islands of Svalbard and the Faroes. Northern Scotland and Iceland will come close to seeing the full eclipse. In Sofia, less than half the sun’s disc will be covered by the eclipse, much less than during the eclipse in January 2011, when nearly two-thirds of the sun’s disc were covered over Bulgaria. It will also be the last solar eclipse over Bulgaria this decade, with some partial eclipses in the 2020s and a near-full eclipse due on June 1 2030. A solar eclipse is caused when the moon passes in front of the sun. The moon for the March 20, 2015, eclipse will be a supermoon, meaning the moon is at its closest point to the earth. This also means the moon appears larger in the sky and where there is a total eclipse the sun will be covered more completely. When the moon is further away, it sometimes fails to block the entire sun, resulting in an annular eclipse with a “ring of fire” around the moon. |
