| Amendments Ban Foreigners from Driving Cars with BG Plates Abroad Amendments to Bulgaria's Traffic Act, passed at first reading in Parliament on Thursday, ban foreigners from permanently driving cars with Bulgarian registration plates. If the amendments come into effect, the Bulgarian car registration will have to be terminated and the plates returned. The violators would face a fine of BGN 300. The practice of citizens of neighbouring EU countries to buy and register their cars in Bulgaria was fairly common, mostly due to lower prices, taxes and cheaper insurance in Bulgaria. Another new provision in the Traffic Act, which has been amended 50 times since 1999, envisions stiff fines of up to BGN 150 for an unattended wailing car alarm. The amendments also include the requirement for cars with foreign plates to be registered in the local municipality, even if they remain with their foreign plates. | I would think this is a breach of the EU laws and brings into question the whole of the EU ethos. |

XCkeo.dpuf Without seeing the actual amendment in its entirety, and before everyone getting over concerned, as in most 'legal' descriptions there will be more to it. Para 1 - ' ban foreigners from permanently driving cars with Bulgarian registration plates.' define foreigners - ?? ' people who are no located in Bulgaria - as per recent land act changes Para 3 - The practice of citizens of neighbouring EU countries to buy and register their cars in Bulgaria was fairly common, mostly due to lower prices, taxes and cheaper insurance in Bulgaria. -- targeting people who are not permanent resident of BG, for example, the practice of Romanians that come over buy and register vehicles then return to Romania? It will be interesting to see what the final draft will be and if and when it would be implemented, but as stated these things change all the time, so I for one am not overly concerned, as yet..
