I'd heard of quinces but never tried or even knew what they looked like ! We were given a few along with some apples by one of our village friends. We still didn't know what they were but the internet is a wonderful thing !! Anyway we ( Brenda ) decided to make a crumble combining the quinces with the apples ( eaters ) . . . delicious is all I can say ! What have we been missing all these years ?? . . . more please Brenda

I don't like them when served by themselves, but with apple in a 50-50 mix and stewed, then served hot with vanilla icecream or custard..yummy!! My mother used to make quince jam or jelly, but I could never come at that.

Tanya`s mum makes some amazing compots, which I eat/drink all the time when i am out there and one of my favourite is the quince one she makes, followed closely by the gooseberry one, (they never new what gooseberrys where until I bought a couple of plants 2 years ago)
Another plant I want to introduce them to is rhubarb when I can get hold of some.

You might get another visit from Mike and Tanya in season. Hope they do OK.

This is the first year I have used quince too. The neighbours both sides are insisting! I have made quince jelly, quince and pear (also from next door) jelly, some with added mint. It makes a stunning tarte tatin, so much so Dave is requesting more! Lucky we have just had more quince. Neighbour also gave me quince jam. I think I will poach the rest of them and freeze them for later use. The freezer is looking alarmingly full now!

Three out of the four are doing quite well in their pots..the forth one looked a bit 'off' so I snipped off the poorly stems, gave it lots of water and hope for the best.

Sounds as if we all know where to come during winter. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Trusting that all is well up your way.

Don't panic! The leaves on mine are dying back for winter. I am going to leave them out and cover them with a thick mulch when the leaves have died properly. Then keep fingers crossed.

Custard! Did you buy it in BG, if yes, please tell where?

Thanks

I've found it in Metro, but why not try Mbco, who is a forum member and might just be able to get you the real thing!

I was born and raised on custard and after 65 (and a bit) years, I've never lost the love of the taste.

They call it 'vanillya' here..custard is a strange word to most Bulgarian folk.

I am slipping into my local Metro tomorrow morning so I will check and see what's available and report back.

Quinces are equally nice cooked with savory dishes such as lamb. As for me, I just adore the smell of them.

Still got one and a half huge drums of Bird's we brought out with us. Dave loves it, I can take or leave it except with rhubarb when it's a must.

Now, if I could get proper, fresh double cream..............
