Hi all. I need a bit of advice re giving monetary tips to builders, taxis, restaurants etc. One person we asked here says they never give tips in BG. But we are having work done on the house (the fires) and there are two labourers and a manager coming. Also would like to know about other situations too.

Hoping for some helpful replies.

I'm with the above poster..tip when the service is good. 10% is about right, in my book.

I know I'm not one of the best at tipping, but I do think that sometimes people think/feel they have to tip just for the sake of it and not just when they get good service.

Although sometimes even with good service if I feel the goods were overpriced then that would also result in there being no tip, because I feel they probably already included it in the price.

Other than that yes I feel 10% would be reasonable.

I watched and noticed how much my Bulgarian friends leave when they settled the smetka, and it's not 10%, usually just rounding it up to the nearest Lev or so, personally i think the 10% "
myth"
is for tourists in the resorts only. I also understand that many waiters/waitresses earnings are based on a % of what they take during the shift, so decide at the time what you think it's worth and don't over do it. Over tipping makes it worse for everyone else that follows.
I have myself fallen foul of "
over tipping"
in the past were at my local eatery i once didn't leave a tip and the waitress never smiled at me again (i didn't have any change that night), she obviously forgetting my previous generosities.
Common sense prevails methinks.
