Hi

As things seem to be speeding along this end, internet searches happening and correspondance with prospective estate agents in BG, Mrs Eq has now been allocated a week holiday in Januery.

We were originally intending to visit for prospective house search in March, but are now considering also viewing in January as this would provide a real insight into the reality of winter in BG.

Would anyone advise against viewing at this time of the year or should we leave until March as originally planned.

Mr Eq

This might help

The likelihood of snow falling is highest around January 19, occurring in 36% of days.
Probability of Snow Fall Being Reported in a Given Day in January

Accumulation at this location in January is just less likely than not. The chances of there being snow on the ground are highest around January 29, occurring 44% of the time.

I wouldn't bother. The snow lasts for weeks here and can get very deep.Enjoy the UK central heating whilst you still have it.

I must agree and if you do come you may find that you are delayed getting back because all flights have been cancelled.

January is likely to have snow and sub zero temperatures which you really do need to prepare for. the snow ( metres high ) turns to ice for weeks making travelling difficult and dangerous. I live here and have a 4x4 but i do not venture out when the snow arrives. c
march would be more pleasant. g

quite right. march 12th 2010, we had a raging snow blizzard for 2 days, caused chaos at varna airport, morning flights were cancelled, roads were just passable with the right vehicle. the only good thing in march its not as cold so the snow doesnt hang around as long. g
october 24, 2011, varna to bourgas we had a snow blizzard, buses, lorries and cars all stuck on the incline. our 4x4 struggled but made it, took 6 hours to get to bourgas with 8 minutes left for my flight. c. weather unpredictable, oh yes. Travelling in January 1536469901

every year is different ..there is no def pattern now
we came on a recky in Jan 2001...to see winter as well as summer
flew into Sofia at night..deep snow and cold.....mini bus the proceded up to the ski slope areas where we stayed for a few days..yes snow down...but only in jumpers and was pleasant not freezing even on top ot the mountains , normal winter cloths were ok
then travelled to sunny beach and later up the coast to varna area.....no probs with roads ,,,yes snow still down and not melting and we were too hot in fleeces and went back to normal uk winter wear....

3 yrs later our secondwinter living her , we were snowed in for 10days in jan ,,,with all water froze for 28 days...thats on the coast ...well very near
so .... !! ???
and every january has been different since

I think there is a convincing argument for curbing our enthusiasm! Travelling in January 1865348797

Thanks everyone for your replies. It's not that we mind the thought of being stranded in Bulgaria by snow, but we would need to be able to get back for the dogs and horse. March it is then. We will probably get someone from Mr Eq's work to dog sit, just in case of emergencies.

I too would think about visiting later as the weather at that time of you acn be very unpredictable and its not unheard of to have several feet of snow in one 24 hour period.
