First topic message reminder :

Just wondering if someone can give me a ballpark figure to rewire a 7 room house? i know it will only be a rough figure without going to see the house and see whats already there, just need a figure so we can put it into our budget.
Thankyou
Steve and Sian

All very good points thank you for the help and advice.

Not sure how many wires enter the house, looks like location for 3 but then from this picture appears only two used.

I Think new cable to the house would be a good idea and the cost isn't so bad.

Oh ahhhh frightening looking things :Complete rewire - Page 4 3897195628: ellisn I hope you are not messing about with electrical stuff and you have got a qualified electrian soriting this out for you.. Also be very careful if you are putting curtain rails up as these houses have the electrical wiriing about 6 to 8ins around the ceiling - We learned the hard way blew all the light on one side of the hosue and knocked mr Oddy clear off his feet.

I think every house should contain one of these Electrical/Metal detectors.

My own is similar to the one at £6.99 and has been used for the last 20 years and has saved me on a few occasions from drilling through the plaster into either a pipe or electric cable.
Once you get to know how to use them properly or with using either the sensitivity setting (if it has one) you can get a width accuracy down to about 1"

The expensive ones are not necessarily any or at least much better than the cheaper ones.

'The pen sticks' at £1.85 are also good if you have actual access to the cable and want to see if it's live or not, plus many other uses.

A very handy bit of kit and they are easy to find here in BG..Pracktika, Alati, Baumax etc normally have them.

Yes indeed we searched the whole of Silistra the following day until we found a detector. We uses it all the time now.

Oh I wouldn't touch those wires outside the house for love or money :Excited fire:

Have one of the detectors after I drilled through a gas pipe in my old kitchen. Also getting a hand held metal detector for locating nails in wod so I can use some reclaimed timber to make garden furniture without destroying my woodworking tools.

You would think the electric companies would upgrade the feed to the house free, where does their responsibilty start and end.

I may rewire the house back to consumer unit then get a specialist to come change the supply wires as suggested and conect the meter to the new consumer unit. I guess the 'specialist' would also be able to add a few earth spikes and connect this up, wondering if they test the earthing after but doubt many would have spent the money on the proper testing equipment as it is expensive and looking at a few builders we have delt with they would rather spend a week hand mixing cement than buy a cement mixer... not as lazy as us brits.

Unfortunatley as you already know once you start talking about things then go away there is always that other little thing that you forgot to mention!

Such as,
Most of the detectors work on the basis of:
1. If it's just normal metal then it just lights up.
2. If it's 'LIVE' electrical cable then it normally flashes on/off.

3. Unfortunately if it's electric cables with no power running through, then it might not indicate anything at all, so always treat wherever you are drilling with a bit of caution and try thinking 'would you have run a pipe or a cable there or put it somewhere else?
(I just went to check what mine shows when there is no electric passing through a cable but unfortunately, not only is the battery flat but the battery terminal has corroded away, so off to do a bit of soldering in a few minutes)' so always make sure it works before relying on it to be accurate.

************************************
Re 3 Phase wiring:
For those that need to know, don't forget that normal single phase wiring across the live and, neutral or earth is 240volts, 3 phase wiring across 2 of the phases is 440volts and most definitely is enough to kill you, and yes, outside overhead wiring from the street post to your property is not always covered in insulation or at least not that it's 100% effective, so watch out with those aluminium ladders when passing beneath.

Also, if your property is wired with 3 phase never wire sockets on different phases so that when appliances are plugged in a person can touch both appliances at the same time. (The same is to be said for light switches)

Visually apart from the number of cables going into a property there is not a lot to indicate if it's a single or 3 phase installation, modern fuse box's combine both types of insulation, it's only the inside that is different, so even though you might only have one fuse box does not necessarily mean you only have single phase wiring.
NEVER ASSUME, if needs be, get it checked out.

I wouldn't be messing with anything past my meter..when I had mine checked by EVN, some years ago, I was told that the supply lines to the meter AND the meter itself was their responsibility, so they replaced everything for free. I've actually spent a lot of time today trying to upload a photo of my meter set up, but it just won't work.

I get really good and fast service from the company here (unlike some of the stories I've heard) and have never had a cause for complaint. I did all my own re-wiring work, had it checked by a local 'sparky' and then again by EVN who hooked up all their testing gear, checked every plug and switch on the property, declared that I had probably 'over engineered everything' , commented that I would probably never experience any problems..so far, so good.

I just hope that if I pull those ceramic/plastic fuses out the house wiring will be dead so I can get rid of it and rewire back to a new consumer unit but will have a multmeter welded to my hip just in case. Do you think when they come to replace and connect up the meter they would have issue with UK plug sockets?

bgbazz, did they test your earth connection if they added the earth rods? I have the path outside of the house dug up where we had the lower level waterproofed so thinking it would be better to get the earth rods in before they put the path back.

Other side of the house looks so much better than this side:

Yes, they did check the earthing..I drove all my spikes in before I completed the concreting/paving project and then just worked over the top of them..one of the reasons I think it works ok, is we took a lightning strike on the pole about 10 metres from the house a few months ago, set the pole on fire, but our lights only flickered!!..all the surge protectors tripped out, but nothing else worth a mention. Having said that, whenever we have electrical storms close by, I always go and disconnect all the computers (7) and the internet router, TVs etc. Maybe it's overkill, but I've never had anything fried.

We were out there in May for a week and I did have intentions of rewiring the upstairs lights so they would be ready for having new ceilings. The roof had just been repaired and this was going to be the next job. But we had so many things to do and it was Latinka's daughters prom that week so many trips to Vidin. So settled for just sorting out all the overgrowth that was ruining the beer view, many a branch died that day:
