PostSubject: Aging in Bulgaria   Aging in Bulgaria Icon_minitimeTue Apr 17, 2012 4:26 pm

I sometimes wonder if I am one of the few on this forum over 70. I know Willowsend is another but who else and particularly those who live here permanently? I know ladies don't usually like mentioning their age, but age seems one of the things which colour our posts. I have come to the conclusion that most members are between 40 and 55 with still plenty of ideas on living and working in Bulgaria. I know when I was that age I was still working and playing just as I had always done with never a thought of what it would be like to be in my 70s. Suddenly it seems to have caught up with me and some of my views are a little more considered (well, most of the time!) Certainly physically I find some activities very tiring (no jokes please!!) Here is a small list:
No smoking and little or no drinking
Much less gardening
No socialising except with my choir ladies
Little desire to join in any expat activities like carboots, quizzes, get togethers, etc although I guess I never was much interested in these activities.
Much shorter dog walks most of the time.
I do look at my photos (yes, in albums which is much more interesting than looking at a computer screen) and I wonder at all the fun I have had over the years and reminisce how quickly it all seems to have disappeared.
Just out of interest, I wondered if any other members have found how their lives have changed living in Bulgaria and aging. That is, if you have lived here for a few years and not just arrived.

Well oldun we have been here nearly 5 years living off pensions and we are over 60. My wife gets her state pension and as I am her toy boy Aging in Bulgaria 1865348797 I still have a couple of years before I qualify. But I do get a company pension which keeps us on the straight and narrow. What I will say to your thread is, is that I have become fitter living here, I no longer do the daily commute to London of 2 hours per day or the running around some of the major Cities in the UK trouble shooting. So instead of sitting on my rear end in a car or a train I now have become very active in my house and garden. We do not get involved with the expat community as we have all that we need friend wise with mostly Bulgarians and a few very selective English people. :Great:Now what the future holds only time will tell. All I say is never say never.

:Good post:Tonyb60 but I have to mention that you are not yet over 70. I have found a big difference in the last couple of years because prior to that I was like you, although I had lived an outdoor life and run a business until I was 64 when I arrived in Bulgaria.
The real reason for posting was to see if there were other members over 70. Obviously not. This is why I sometimes wonder if my posts are relevant in this day and age. I don't want to be a grumpy old pensioner although I have to say my 'much younger' partner shares the same views as I do which is probably the 'fatal attraction' between us! Am I still young at heart or is he the last of a generation that is able to see both sides of an argument? Angel Aging in Bulgaria 2381841692

You are as old as you feel. Nothing suddenly changes when you reach 70, 80, 90 etc but your internals such as heart and lungs may or may not start to deteriorate and affect how old you feel.

A very astute reply Fido - thanks for that. You are right, nothing changes overnight but there are rumblings internally either in brain or body. Some days like today and yesterday I feel really well and YOUNG! However, I have had a few nasty falls of late, the last one very bad which bruised my face badly. The only worry I have healthwise is this falling over and why I do it. I am having new glasses soon because the bi-focals may not be exactly correct and I realise the last pair of shoes I bought were really a size too big. Its amazing how a small thing like this can affect you especially with all the unevenness of terrain in town and country. I just hope correcting these two things are the only problem. Aches and pains gradually restricting the speed I used to go at I can cope with! Fortunately I can still string some words together to make sense. Aging in Bulgaria 2381841692

A lot of us in Voynika are over 60 but still in good health and gardening, walking etc

Coming from California, It's a huge change from me, had my own business and work around our area, concerts, movies and restaurant from all over the over are around our place, lived in a apartment so no gardening and back-ache but I love our life here because I'm like you sing the Bulgarian folklore and I am very involved in the village life and we're very respected for our help and donations to the village.
I have a lot of Bulgarian friends and very few British friends and that's the only way I got to speak the language and get involved in every thing that happens in our village0

In a word I love it but don't want to die here

Hi Cherifa - Nice to hear from you again. I remember you from another forum. Yes, its lovely to be involved in village life and I do enjoy our choir outings even though I find them a bit tiring sometimes. Lots of hanging around but you do get to know the 'real Bulgaria' and mostly everyone is around my age. It has also made me appreciate our village even more. No other village has the same atmosphere although you can't really judge on one visit. Aging in Bulgaria 2581928987
