Eastern Bulgaria Recovers from Early Winter Nightmare
Eastern Bulgaria is slowly recovering Wednesday after being hit in the beginning of the week by a heavy, early snow storm with gusty winds.
All roads in the country are passable, but the Shipka, Zlatishki, Tvardishki and Vratnik mountain passes in Stara Planina are closed. Traffic in the Mountain Pass of the Republic is allowed only one way at a time, which has created long lines and congestion.
234 villages and towns are still without power with the most serious situation reported in the central Gabrovo Region.
Civil Defence inform that there are no more people being stuck in their vehicles or in trains and all have been rescued and transported to safe places.
Transport Minister, Ivaylo Moskovski, traveled in person Tuesday to the mountain rail-road station of Plachkovtsi near the town of Tryavna to head the rescue operation of people being blocked in a train for 24 hours, after inclement weather caused the State Rail-road company, BDZ, to shut down all trains in north-eastern Bulgaria.
Rescue teams have pulled over 500 people, who were stuck in the heavy snow, in 38 cars, and 23 buses and minivans.
Traffic police warn drivers who don't have winter tires and tire chains in mountain passes that they are going to face the maximum sanction's and fines.

| Cold Spell to Bring Snow to Bulgaria End-Week
After the sunny Wednesday when the mercury hit 19 degrees Celsius, Bulgaria will wake up to much colder temperatures on Thursday and see a new spate of snowfalls at the end of the week.
The winter arrived early in Bulgaria n the middle of October, but was cut short by the so-called Gypsy summer.
Now the mercury is expected to plunge to 2 degrees Celsius below zero in western Bulgaria and nearly hurricane winds on the Black Sea coast and the entire eastern Bulgaria where there will be a mix of rain and snow.
The mercury in the capital Sofia will not climb higher than 6 degrees. |

| Sofia Enjoys First Major Snowfall
Bulgaria's capital Sofia was surprised before noon on Thursday by its first major snowfall for the 2011-2012 winter.
Even though it snowed very briefly in Sofia in October, the weather in November, which used to be the time when it started snowing along Bulgaria's latitude, has been very warm, with 9 Bulgarian cities seeing record temperature highs two days ago – about 20 degrees Celsius.
Bulgaria's temperatures dropped to -3 / 2 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with strong gusts of northwestern wind.
Large parts of Northern, Central, and Eastern Bulgaria have declared a Code " Yellow" alert because of the hurricane-like winds, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences announced. |

| Bulgaria to Welcome 2012 with Snow, Low Temperatures
Bulgaria will be hit at the end of the week by a freezing cold wave, bringing a new spate of snowfalls.
Mornings will be extremely cold and temperatures will not exceed zero degrees during the day, the forecast says.
Bulgaria will experience minimum temperatures ranging between -6 to -15 degrees Celsius in the last days of the year.
Unlike the Christmas holidays, when Bulgarians will enjoy milder weather, especially along the Black Sea coast and the Southeastern parts of the country, the last days of 2011 will see the mercury plunge to -18 degrees Celsius especially in the Danube plain and in places with heavy snowfalls.
On January 1, there will be fogs in the lowlands and plains. Temperatures will remain below zero during the day. However, the weather will be sunnier and warmer in the mountains.
The winter arrived early in Bulgaria in the middle of October, but was cut short by the so-called Gypsy summer. |

| 19 Bulgarian Regions under Code Yellow over Gusty WindsCode yellow has been declared for 19 northern and eastern Bulgarian regions, including the Sofia Region, Saturday over the forecast for gusty winds. The forecast has been issued by the Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, BAS. Code yellow means potentially dangerous weather, where the forecast is not for unusual meteorological events, but requires people to exercise caution. The BAS Institute joined Friday the European Meteoalarm, which publishes information on extreme weather on the site [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. |
