A SCOTS pensioner is being held by police in Bulgaria after allegedly confessing to the murder of an 11-year-old boy whose disappearance sparked a nationwide manhunt.

The 71-year-old man has allegedly admitted the crime after failing a polygraph test and was last night in police custody, with a further court hearing due this morning.

The suspect has been widely named in Bulgarian media as David Branson or David Branson Ferguson.

My first instinct on reading this was obviously horror but my second instinct was that maybe, being a 'loner', he could be used as a scapegoat for the real murdurer. It could have been the uncle or even one of his close family. Police want an arrest and a foreign loner would be an easy target. Beat him up so he would confess and then put him in gaol so no-one could defend him. Sounds far-fetched? Maybe, but bad things happen out here both by wicked foreigners and wicked Bulgarians. Naturally, if he is guilty then he deserves what he gets but don't lets get hysterical until his guilt is actually proven which maybe very difficult in this country with so much corruption. I feel for him if he isn't guilty and anger and disgust if he is. Bear in mind his age too. Maybe he just came to live here for a quiet life and helping local children earn some money perhaps? I am reserving judgement.
