Homemade Bomb Kills 1 in Bulgaria's Orphanage

One child has died and two are seriously injured when a homemade bomb exploded in an orphanage in the town of Krumovgrad.

The news was reported Saturday by Darik radio.

The injured children have been taken by an emergency room ambulance to the hospital in the regional center of the city of Kardzhali.

The blast occurred while the children were trying to make a homemade explosive device.

What are these people doing allowing children to play with such stuff !!! it makes me mad when I think about it

The latest

There isnt any conclusive evidence about the exact origin of the bomb that killed 3 children in a Bulgarian orphanage.

The statement was made Sunday in an interview for Darik radio by prominent Bulgarian attorney, Marin Markovski, who is the pro bono lawyer of the heating attendant of the youth social complex in Krumovgrad, Hamdi Ali. Markovski reiterated what he told the court there isnt any proof the explosive came from Alis yard.

Ali, who was released on bail Thursday, is accused of giving the three boys the bomb that exploded and killed them on December 6.

Markovski told Darik that around noon, on the day of the tragedy, two of the three children were helping Ali in doing some yard work. Ali promised the children he would give them some old car speakers he had laying around, which he did. The kids took the speakers and just before leaving Alis house, they were joined by the third boy, who had been carrying a big yellow envelope. The boy told his friends the envelope contained bicycle parts. The three had returned to the orphanage where the blast occurred some 2 hours later.

According to Markovski, the investigation must focus on the above said yellow envelope because this would be the key to solve the mystery with the bombs origin.

The defense attorney further said that the chests found in Alis yard did not contain any arms or explosives and every one in Krumovgrad had such chests.

Markovski explained the scene of the tragedy was a total devastation and evidence was destroyed, including the car speakers Ali says he had given the children. He expects the court to rule on the case around May, 2010.

The youth home in Krumovgrad is not like other orphanages around the country. It is under the wing of the ethnic Turkish party, Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), so it is not the regular place of this type filthy where children live in misery and are abused daily. This is different, the environment is different, the teachers are too. These are not abandoned children. I must say Muslims take better care of their kids, Markovski said.

Bulgaria Orphanage Tragedy Raises Concerns over Bomb Storage

Bulgaria Defense Minister, Nikolay Mladenov, has confirmed that the investigation after the Krumovgrad tragedy, in which three teenagers died in an explosion at an orphanage, has now ended.

Mladenov said that there had been some pretty interesting things discovered by the investigation. He added that a number of questions had been raised about how the military kept records of stored weapons.

Hamdi Ali, the heating engineer at the orphanage along with social workers Krasimir Terziev and Shengyul Hassan, as well as the former director of the social home, Svetoslav Deyov, were all bailed and are due to appear in court charged in connection with the tragedy.

The victims Dzhingiz Rushen (13), and Sunay Keazim (16) and Dzhingiz Dzhemal (15) were killed when an improvised home-made bomb constructed from an old mine exploded in early December.

It is so very sad to think that these young boy lost their life and for what? Still nobody knows! Why is it taking so long to establish who is at fault? Will they every know the reason and more to the point, do they really care enough to ensure this never ever happens again. Lets just hope justice is served accordingly. But the saddest thing of all is, 3 young boys have died, what ever happens will not compensated for this dreadful loss.

Suicide Follows Deadly Blast in Bulgarian Orphanage

The main suspect for the deadly blast at an orphanage in the southern town of Krumovgrad has committed suicide two weeks after the tragedy, which killed three children.

Hamdi Ali, 54, operated the local heating utility at the orphanage. He is said to have been a close friend of the children and is believed to have given them a detonator from a military mine by mistake.

This is the second time that Ali attempts to take his own life after one day after the tragedy he stabbed himself in the stomach with a knife and was hospitalized. He was released a week ago on a bail of BGN 500.

The body of the dead man was found by his wife Tuesday afternoon in the ceiling of their house.

The fatal explosion occurred on December 5. One of the boys died on the scene while the other has been taken to the Krumovgrad hospital where he later died. A third boy was listed in critical condition in the hospital in the regional center of the city of Kardzhali, and died during surgery.

The victims Dzhingiz Rushen (13), and Sunay Keazim (16) are from the nearby villages of Pelin and Zimornitsa, while the third killed boy Dzhingiz Dzhemal (15) was born in the village of Sokolinovo, close to the southern border town of Momchilgrad.

The orphanage did not have security guards, which according to the mayor is a wide-spread practice, aiming to provide more serene environment for the children in the institution.

Krumovgrad is a small, dilapidated and impoverished town, located close to the border with Greece. The border region is known to have been once strewn with mines and many of them are still buried in the ground.

This is awful news - this man must have been in pieces to go to such drastic length - I know what he did was very wrong and I am assuming he realised this himself when it was too late, but now this has caused yet more suffering to his family - Such a dreadful shame. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Bulgarian Prosecutor Dismisses Charges in Deadly Orphanage Blast

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Bulgaria’s southern city of Kardzhali dismissed Thursday the case against four individuals over an explosion at an orphanage which resulted in the dead of three children.

The fatal explosion occurred on December 5, 2009 in the town of Krumovgrad. One of the boys died on the scene while the other has been taken to the Krumovgrad hospital where he later died. A third boy was listed in critical condition in the hospital in the regional center – the city of Kardzhali, and died during surgery.

The orphanage did not have security guards, which according to the mayor is a wide-spread practice, aiming to provide more serene environment for the children in the institution.

The four people, who until now were facing charges, are the Principal of the orpahanage “New Life,” Svetoslav Dayov, the children’s supervisors, Shengyul Hasan and Krasimir Terziev and Hamdi Ali, the heating attendant at the home. Ali later committed suicide by hanging himself inside the family house.

Ali was accused of having given the children what he and they thought was a loudspeaker, which turned to be a mine explosive. A fifth individual, Valentin Valkov, a former serviceman, has been turned to the Court Martial in Plovdiv on Thursday.

The probe did not lead to evidence that Dayov, Hasan and Terziev have violated their duties and any grounds to charge them with manslaughter. As far as Valkov, the prosecutor says he must be probed further because for a long time he took out from the Krumovgrad barracks military property and kept it at Ali’s house both when on active duty and in the reserves.

Krumovgrad is a small, dilapidated and impoverished town, with mostly ethnic Turkish population, located close to the border with Greece. The border region is known to have been once strewn with mines and many of them are still buried in the ground.

this is a innocent act that went wrong, he did not realise what he did, and chose to end his life following the loss of young people, how sad that an act for which he saw to the better ended in loss of life, he must have been torn at what resulted to end his own life, this is such a sad story which appears to offer no malice what so ever, just a mistake, so sad for all involved.
