Drive carefully, Bulgaria's traffic police urge on eve of long weekend
On the eve of Bulgaria's September 22 to 25 Independence Day long weekend, Bulgaria's traffic police issued an urgent appeal for people to drive carefully.
The riskiest road was seen as the E79 route from Vidin through Sofia to Greece, according to a September 21 report by Bulgarian National Television.
Other risky roads included the main Sofia to Varna route, the section of the Sofia to Bourgas route after Sliven to the Petoluchkata intersection, and the road sections near the villages of Topolchane, Kaloyanovo and Gorno Aleksandrovo.
Among the most dangerous were the Rousse - Byala roads, Trakiya motorway, and the E80 route, which have seen many accidents this past summer. The Varna area saw the most road fatalities this summer.
Traffic police said that they expected heavy traffic during the long weekend, and called on people to keep to reasonable driving speeds, maintain safe following distances between cars, and to be especially careful in mountainous areas and on motorways.
All passengers, not just drivers, should wear seatbelts and children should be strapped into proper child-safe seats, traffic police said.
On the morning of September 21, there was serious traffic congestion on the main road through the Kresna Gorge after two heavy goods lorries, one from Bulgaria and the other from Macedonia, collided. A passenger in the Bulgarian lorry was killed on impact, the Interior Ministry said.
