Black Sea Dolphin Found Shot Dead in Bulgaria
dead dolphin was found washed ashore Thursday near the southern Bulgarian Coral Black Sea vacation village.
The disturbing sight of the Black Sea dolphin with multiple shot wounds was reported by tourists, the Bulgarian National Television. The dead dolphin has been apparently shot with an automatic riffle.
Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov has already ordered an investigation into the case. The Black Sea dolphin is an endangered species, he has pointed out, as cited by the BGNES news agency.
Currently, it is estimated that only a few thousand Black Sea dolphins are living.
Since the end of July, animal cruelty has been considered a crime in Bulgaria to be punished by jail time or probation. The amendments in the country's Penal Code criminalizing animal cruelty were passed in April, but the Parliament postponed by three months the approval of the texts on animal cruelty.
The amendments were triggered by several widely publicized cases of animal cruelty across the country. |

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]No action being taken ...no suprise there . The case of the dead dolphin that was found washed ashore in Bulgaria with multiple shot wounds will not be investigated, a local radio station has said. The Black Sea dolphin was found in an advanced stage of decomposition and the Bulgarian police were not able to determine whether its wounds were a result of gun shots, even though witnesses have stated with certainty they were. Furthermore, the animal has already been sent to a mass carcass disposal site, which would make any investigation attempts virtually impossible, the local Darik radio has pointed out. The dolphin's body was found near the southern Bulgarian Coral Black Sea vacation village. It had been apparently shot with an automatic rifle, witnesses have said. On Thursday, Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov declared he had already ordered an investigation into the case. Since the end of July, animal cruelty has been considered a crime in Bulgaria to be punished by jail time or probation. The Black Sea dolphin is an endangered species and murdering one would result in 5 years behind bars for the perpetrator and a fine between BGN 5 000 and BGN 20 000. |
