Varna Airport Closure Oct 2011 – Feb 2012

Bulgaria’s Varna Airport will be closed to all commercial traffic as the project for runway overhaul will begin from 15OCT11 to 28FEB12.

As a result, a number of airlines operating into Varna will be operating into Bourgas instead, including Austrian, MALEV. oneWorld member S7 Airlines will increase Bourgas service from 2 to 4 weekly. Bulgaria Air will suspend Varna service during this period.

S7 Airlines will cancel Varna service for entire Winter season

this will cause mayhem for those who visit at christmas and those that commute daily from varna to sofia to work. will it reopen in march is the question, the winter will play havoc with the work schedule. mmmmmmmmmmmmm i usually go varna to sofia to manchester in march, but i have my doubts if it will reopen in time.
so, a drive to spain looks like an alternative until varna is reopened.

I hope they sort it out before March they will lose such a lot of business in one month let alone 5 months. Our flight has been changed to Burgas coming back to the UK in Oct also coming back a day later on 16th had to change everything round at work too . Now they should be putting on a bus from Varna to Burgas, but had a message to say still working that out. You can guarantee if they do put on a bus, it will be some stupid O'clock we have to be in Varna. Trouble is I am not a good traveler so there will be lots of stops . Just our luck eh! Ah well, that's life

Can you not get a flight from Burgas to Sofia Star?

varna is only 45 minutes away and im not reliant on anyone, burgas is much further away, bit of an inconvenience. so we have decided to travel to italy for a few days and board the ferry to spain for a holiday, which would never have crossed my mind if varna was not closing.

I wish the powers that be would open the airport at Gorna. We have a 3hr trek to Sofia.

There was talk about opening an airport in Gorna sometime last year but I'm not sure what has become of it?

I did hear the same about an airport possibility in Gorna and that was at the beginning of the year but I have been told anything since so maybe it was shelved for now but I can see it happening in the future.
