| I seem to have confused some people when I posted a comment in an existing thread on this forum so I will keep this simple. Does anyone here use a UK registered vehicle long term in Bulgaria? I know some people split their time between the 2 countries so I guess there will be some of you who do. If so, do you know of an insurance firm that will allow more than 90 days a year European cover? I know there are camper van policies that cover longer periods of touring but I'm thinking of ordinary cars or vans. |

| What sort of time span are you thinking of in each country?

If you have a car for more than 6 months in any EU Country then you must register the vehicle in that location. I get rather miffed about cars that I see on a regular basis that have UK plates on them. Insurance may be invalid and MOT would probably be out of date. A bit like un-insured drivers in the UK. If these vehicles are in an accident who would pay the costs I ask. Not the insurance companies. So could you stand the risk? |

sarah For the sake of argument we could say 6 months in each country. I'm thinking mainly in terms of retired people with a main residence in UK but who spend several months a year in a holiday home in Bulgaria. Such people probably can't claim residency in Bulgaria so are not allowed to own a Bulgarian registered vehicle. |

| I've now been told that UK insurance companies are obliged to provide minimum 3rd party only cover for Europe, is this correct? |

| If you spend six months in UK each year but the only property you own is your BG home, which country are you considered a resident of? If for instance you stayed with relatives/lived in a motorhome or rented a flat when not in your Bulgarian home? |

The original post was about cars in BG on GB plates so this post is :OffTopic:But you are obliged to apply for long stay residency when here for over 3 months. I think you would need to ask the Home & Commonwealth office for an answer on this. People also need to be aware that your entry and departure from the UK is recorded. When you go through passport control your passport is swiped hence a record has been made at the boarder control point. |
