Seven tons of expired food seized on Bulgarian border with Greece
Bulgarian customs officers thwarted the import from Greece of a large shipment of expired dairy products and meat, Bulgarian television station bTV said on July 11 2011.
More than seven tons of meat and milk were seized by authorities at the Petko Voivoda border crossing point near Svilengrad. The shipment was advertised as lamb and chicken, but following a check, it was determined that it was mainly beef, mince and dairy products.
The entire shipment had an expired date, the report said.
The origin of the shipment for the moment is unclear. No documentation was presented, but is believed that it was imported to Greece from Brazil and then repackaged in Greece for subsequent import to Bulgaria..
Prosecutors have started an official investigation, the report said.
