PostSubject: Food places closed   Wed Sep 21, 2011 6:38 pm

Sofia Echo

Sixty-three food places were closed after summer inspections, Bulgaria's Food Safety Agency says

Summer season inspections by the Food Safety Agency have come to a close, and between April 1 and September 16, the checks led to 63 food places being shut down.

During the inspections, 7500 kilograms of food and 1600 litres of drinks were confiscated, according to the agency.

In all, 8600 checks were carried out, in Bourgas, Varna and Dobrich.

Most of the orders to shut down food places, permanently or temporarily, were issued in Bourgas.

According to a report by television station bTV, reasons for action against eating places by the Food Safety Agency inspectors included poor hygiene, a lack of the required documents, food that was unlabelled and food that had passed its expiry date

Bulgaria’s Food Safety Agency begins Festive Season inspections

Bulgaria’s Food Safety Agency has begun inspections of eating places throughout the country, ahead of the Festive Season, Bulgarian National Television said on December 13 2011.

No shortcomings had been found so far in inspections done in the capital city Sofia, but elsewhere, problems had been found such as incomplete purchase records and the lack of labelling specifying food expiry dates.

In the event of serious breaches of the rules, the agency may shut down establishments selling food.

Agency chief inspector Nikolina Kanchovska said that if discrepancies were found in documentation during inspections, further investigations were carried out.

She said that inspectors would be very active around the Christmas and New Year holidays, inspecting restaurants and other food outlets in Sofia.

Anyone suspecting problems in food safety and hygiene may contact the agency’s hotline, 0700 1299, leaving their name, contacts and details of the complaint.

I think you have a very valid point here Daisy there are so many expats who came to Bulgaria without thinking about how they would survive so they turned to food and many have not even any ideas about food safety.
