String of mild earthquakes hits Bulgaria

Sofia echo Wed, Oct 28 2009

A series of mild earthquakes were felt in Bulgaria, starting at 12.21pm on October 28 2009, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Scientists from the Seismological Center and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Institute of Geophysics triangulated the tremor at about 245km south-east of the capital city, Sofia.

The earthquake was 3.2 on the Richter scale, near Toundja municipality in the Yambol region, the Civil Protection National Service said.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) confirmed that a 3.1-magnitude tremor epicentred 57km south-east of the town of Stara Zagora, was felt, causing no damage or injuries.

The follow-up to the tremor was slightly stronger, 3.2-magnitude, pinpointed at 10km underground, this time 54 km south-east of Stara Zagora.

The last jolt was a mild 2.8-magnitude at 1pm about 57km north-west of the Turkish city of Edirne, and 26km west of the Bulgarian town of Elhovo,

According to initial reports, there were no casualties from the tremors. There are also no reports of residential structural damage or damage to infrastructure.

Light Earthquake Registered in Southern Bulgaria

A light earthquake was registered on Bulgarian territory Monday morning, according to information of the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The quake had a 2.2 magnitude on the Richter scale and occurred at 8:27 am Monday. The epicentre is 102 km south of the capital Sofia and 14 km south-west of the town of Simitli at a depth of 2 km.

There no reports of injuries and material damage.

Light Tremor Shakes South-eastern Bulgaria

A light earthquake with a 2.6 magnitude on the Richter scale was registered on the territory of Bulgaria late on Wednesday, minutes before midnight.

The Seismology Centre at the Geophysics Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences informs that the earthquake struck at 23:53 pm on Wednesday night. The epicentre was 240 km south-east of the capital city Sofia.

The tremor was lightly felt at the southern settlements of the municipality of Tundzha, near the town of Yambol, South-eastern Bulgaria.

No injuries and material damages have been reported.

Light Earthquake Registered in Southern Bulgaria

A light earthquake was registered in southern Bulgaria Wednesday morning, the Seismology Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences reports.

The epicentre is near the village of Kobilyane, 20 km south west of the southern city of Kardzhali. It happened at 11:10 am with a 2.5 magnitude on the Richter scale.

The quake was not felt by local people and there are no reports of fatalities and material damage.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.4 on the Richer scale occurred in Eastern Bulgaria on Wednesday.

The quake hit at 4:47 pm, and its epicentre was located 240 km south east of the capital Sofia, according to the Seismology Centre of the Geophysics Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The earthquake was felt in the south-eastern city of Yambol. No casualties or damages have been reported.

Minor Quake Felt in Bulgaria's Bansko

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale was felt in South western Bulgaria Wednesday night.

The earthquake hit at 7:14 pm on Wednesday, according to the European Mediterranean Seismology Centre.

Its epicentre was 12 km north east of Bulgarian mountain resort Bansko and 105 km south west of Plovidv, at a depth of 5 km. No related damages have been reported.

Medium Earthquake Registered in South eastern Bulgaria

A 3.5 Richter magnitude earthquake was registered Saturday midday in southeaster Bulgaria near the town of Topolovgrad.

The tremor, felt around 13.20 local time, is not reported to have caused any damages.

The epicentre was 17 km north west of Topolovgrad and 55 km east of the city of Stara Zagora.

Second Light Earthquake in Southern Bulgaria within 15 Hours

A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3 on the Richter scale was registered close to the city of Plovdiv in Southern Bulgaria on Friday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 31 km east of Plovdiv and 9 km west of the town of Parvomay. The tremor occurred at 5:49 pm local time, according to the European Seismology Center.

Earlier on Friday, at 2.31 am, a light earthquake, measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale, was registered in Southeastern Bulgaria, near Yambol.
