Piccadilly, Lidl Open New Supermarkets in Bulgaria

The supermarket chains "
Piccadilly"
and "
Lidl"
have opened new stores in the country, the companies announce.

The German "
Lidl"
entered for the first time the Black Sea city of Burgas by opening three stores at once and replacing the facilities of the "
Plus"
chain, which were purchased by Lidl.

Piccadilly opened its 5th supermarket in Sofia, replacing the "
Elemag"
store on "
Kozyak"
street. The company also has 10 smaller stores in the capital known as "
Piccadilly Express."

Lidl"
now has 30 stores in Bulgaria. "
Piccadilly"
has 26 supermarkets, 12 "
Piccadilly Express"
stores and one hypermarket - "
Tempo,"
which is located in the capital Sofia.

In the beginning of March, the Belgian company Delhaize acquired 100% of the shares of Serbian Delta Maxi Group, owner of the Piccadilly retail store chain operating in Bulgaria.

Delta Maxi (Delta Holding) runs some 450 stores in 5 countries in South-Eastern Europe. With the move, Delhaize added to its already-existing Greek and Romanian branches.

Very good news but I would love to see Tesco here, they don't have that far to come so maybe in the future it will happen? I did hear that Tesco bought a load of plots some years back and are still sitting on them so maybe ?

Germany's Lidl to expand Bulgarian chain to 40 stores in a few months

German discount retailer plans to expand its chain to 40 outlets within several months from 30 stores currently, Milena Dragiiska-Dencheva, head of Lidl Bulgaria, said as quoted by regal.bg on March 30 2011.

The figures includes 22 stores of the Plus chain, which was recently acquired by Lidl's owner, Schwarz Group.

Expansion in Bulgaria is proceeding rapidly, even for a retailer like Lidl, Dragiiska-Dencheva said.

Lidl has so far invested about 200 million Euro in its Bulgarian chain. Apart from stores, the retailer also has a logistics centre in the village of Ravno Pole, near Sofia.

bit different situation with the supermarkets here now from when i moved ...we had one piccy and a metro...plus all the little corner shops of course (no , they were not all on a corner 0 [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Yes you are right Varnagirl, when we went to Silistra in 2006 there was only one store now there are about 5 supermarkets and lots of big electrical stores and 3 new hotels. It has come along in leaps and bounds and that is only a small town. Expect Lidl will be there soon too
