First topic message reminder :

Bulgaria was never ready to enter the EU and i am amazed that they are. nothing in four years has happened, nothing. balchik is still like war torn beirut, the roads are worse than ever. this is the first time i have began to question whether this is the place i want to be.

having been missed out of the recent census, i went to balchik municipality with a letter informing them that i had not taken part, like the eu told me to do. they would not take the letter, they told me the census is over and thats the end of the matter and pushed me out of the building.

I went to pay my municipality car tax, which is a bone of contention too. i bought a 2 year old car in vt last year, the owners paid 400 lev car tax from new. in balchik i was charged 650 levs at 2 years old, this year, it is 744 levs. they are charging over the top yet theres nothing in return.

Air fares are too expensive, fine dining not, entertainment where. and the roads are dangerous, the paths are too.

I love where i live, its rural, pretty and quiet. :Sunny:but its not enough and i see no signs of anything improving, need to do some serious thinking. im falling out of love with bulgaria.

Yes - Bulgaria has its problems - But lets not forget so does the UK - Thousands job losses in the police force (the last thing they need), schools being sub standard, social problems, pensioners not having enough money to pay bills, house repossessions, muggings, lager louts.... I could go on.

My sister-in-law has managed at a youth drop in centre for many years - She helps the teenagers with problems, is someone for them to talk to when they can't go to their parents etc. There are 30+ youths that go there pretty much regularly. This facility is now one of the many closing (as part of the austerity measures), being in rural Lincolnshire, these kids have no-where else to socialise apart from hanging round on the streets at night with no supervision.

We all know that Eu money often "
falls"
into the wrong hands here - that DOES need to be addressed. Someone will put a stop to this sooner or later, I am sure of that.

Maybe, just maybe, part of Bulgaria's problem is just that they joined the EU at the wrong time - many, many other EU and non EU countries all over the world are experiencing incredible hardship and dis-satisfaction with their governments at the moment.

Only time will tell......

Maybe as a counter to this thread maybe there could another side which says "
Has the UK lost the plot"
?

Is there corruption in the UK yes there most definitely is.

Bank bonuses, how can they justify the sort of money given away and it is our money.

austerity measures, who suffers not the fat cats that's for sure.

Over population due to excessive immigration.

Lack of employment maybe due to over population (immigration again)

No or little money for social needs (Over population again)

Pensions being capped WHY, over population nothing to do with too many Brits.

Too many handouts ( Its our money again)

Street crime up but just watch the news just where and who is causing the problems?

Youth has no respect for its elders any more but you can blame the so called PC state. Too many do gooders.

Parents are not allowed to discipline their own kids any more PC state.

Now ask yourself a question why did I move abroad. Not just to Bulgaria but abroad. Maybe I/we feel that the Country is no longer the Country that I/we once loved. Maybe it is being taken over by its own generosity/stupidity. Don't bury your head in the sand because if it was that good you would not have left it in the first place.

Your right about that but thought the comment is warranted at this point.

I agree with you sallyann, it does get a bit dull and tedious after a while

We also have an 'ex-pat lounge' where ex-pat folks living in Bulgaria full time can talk about anything they like - as it says in the description (UK included!).

there are problems in any country, i have had my winge now and feel better g. maybe the lack of progress only applies to the area that i live in where the municipality not doing what it is supposed to do.
anyone been to dobrich lately, they are doing up the pedestrian area and although not finished yet, it is going to be rather nice. so money is being spent there, have you seen any developments in your area. g

Kotel had a complete mains drainage system installed last year, then a new mains water supply to every home (spring water from a natural source in the mountain), introduction of broadband internet and cable TV, and then they completely repaired all the roads afterwards in time for this years tourist season.

So no shortage of money being spent in Kotel g

(plus our rates are only 30 leva per year which includes weekly dustbin collection!)
