Bulgaria Starts Preparing to Introduce Electronic Toll Systems
Bulgaria has started working towards implementing electronic toll systems as a replacement for its existing road vignettes, the Council of Minister's press centre has announced.
" Those who drive less will pay less, those who drive more will pay more," Regional Minister Rosen Plevneliev commented on Wednesday, stating that the new toll systems will be the fairest road pricing concept.
On previous occasions, Plevneliev has stated that the implementation of a toll system would take 4-5 years, but in his opinion, it should be ready by 2015-2016.
Electronic toll collection (ETC), an adaptation of military " identification friend or foe" technology, aims to eliminate the delay on toll roads by collecting tolls electronically. It determines whether the cars passing are enrolled in the program, alerts enforcers for those that are not, and electronically debits the accounts of registered car owners without requiring them to stop. |

This will make it more expensive all round, you only have to look at parts of France to see how expensive it can be on certain roads to realise this

The idea of automatic debiting just sends a shiver down my spine. If the UK keep over charging on direct debits from utility companies then... oh boy you can be sure that Bulgaria will too, as this will do doubt be given to a private company that submits the biggest back hander during the tendering period. Then under the current legal system you will have to sue them to get your money back if your over charged and then spend the rest of your life pursuing them for the money that they will never pay you back???? Am I being cynical?????

It'll be trialled then shelved here as it won't work.It would work in Western europe. There are too many tracks here to get around these things and they are legal to drive on unlike the UK.'The Hills will be alive with the sound of Lada's' And they will literally!

Bulgarians will drive off road in anything to save a teaspoon of fuel on a journey so it won't take long for them to find a way around the tolls. There is also too little traffic here in BG to make it viable.Oh and lastly,How will they charge journeys to cards when the majority of the country don't have bank accounts? Pre-paid charge cards maybe? Who Knows.....I think the Gov will loose revenue from this one as they are getting 67lev a year off most of us at the moment. It might work in Sofia but not Nationally.
