Ambassador James Warlick: Bulgarian justice system different for rich and poor
US ambassador to Bulgaria James Warlick has criticised the country's judicial system, branding it dishonest and corrupt, as well as operating with dual standards, Bulgarian media reported.
There are two justice systems in the country, according to Warlick. One is for the affluent and powerful, who remain above the law and often bypass justice. The other is for the poor and ordinary Bulgarians.
Warlick made his comments during a discussion on national security and anti-crime strategy, organised by the George Marshall association in Bulgaria.
Ambassador Warlick said that the challenge before the Government is to establish the rule of law and eradicate "
judicial double standards"
. Warlick said that in order for this to happen, the Interior Ministry must carry out the necessary arrests. While respecting citizens' rights, it must gather the necessary evidence that prosecutors need to be effective and capable. He also said that the judicial system needs to be transparent.
The diplomat advised the Government to pay special attention to the Bulgarian law pertaining to the impounding of property obtained through criminal activity. Warlick said that in Germany and Switzerland the authorities have "
strong legislation enabling them to freeze the assets of criminals"
.
