I just found this in the novinite news and thought how terrible that so many people should be killed in one night in road accidents and the latest crash was a drunk driver.

Horrific Car Crashes Take Toll on Bulgaria

Part of the Sofia downtown was blockaded Saturday afternoon due to the collision of two cars near the building of the Military Medical Academy.

Three people – a man, a woman, and a child – were wounded in the accident. According to preliminary information of the police, one the drivers caused the crash as he was driving drunk.

A total of 5 people died overnight in 13 severe crashes across Bulgaria;
a total of 15 people were injured, one of them is critical.

In the more than a month since the start of 2011, 51 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Bulgaria, and 578 were injured.

i often see childen sitting on their parents laps in the front of the car. more education is needed. in many ways bulgaria is like the uk was years ago

Its very sad really but from the things I have read its going to take more than education I think if the police did their job correctly and stopped these drivers and gave them a fine and some points this would go a long way to helping this problem but like most things it has to come from the top first and led by example.

Unfortunately, the sort of examples you tend to get are drunken policemen crashing into petrol stations. Luckily, no-one was hurt, but he could have caused the whole place to explode.

In theory Andy, a good idea but to be realistic a punishment needs to be implemented through the courts and the driver never to be allowed behind the wheel of a vehicle for a long period of time. In many cases a fine will go in the back pocket of the police officer and to give a guilty driver points will make him think he has gone to the top of the class. Some where on this forum I think I remember seeing a posting about how many police officers were bribed last year to do with traffic related offences

I think your right Brian but I do believe that in Bulgaria they take points away andfnot give them in the same way as they do in the uk lets hope as time goes by there is less of this sort of thing and that precious life can be saved.

Hi LisA,

The less savvy users on this forum do not live in Bulgaria and so don't know much at all about the system/s.

It’s a good point raised George unless you live in a country and experience the laws and culture it’s not really possible to know anything much that is going to help either yourself or others the only way therefore is to live and breathe the country and its customs as well as the laws of the land and only then can you get to grips with the system
