Bulgarian Revenue Agency Hits on Law-breaking Gas Stations

Teams from Bulgaria's National Revenue Agency (NRA) closed Tuesday, in the course of two hours, over forty gas stations across the country.

The reason for shutting these stations down is the fact they failed to connect their cash registers with the NRA information system, as mandated.

The Agency informs some of these stations did not even open for business because they knew they would violate the law over the failure to send electronic data for their sales.

Tax agents are carrying out 400 such checks in Bulgaria now. Starting Tuesday, each gas station should automatically transmit data for the daily revenues without the knowledge of the owner at what exact time this is done. In addition, NRA will have real-time access to each cash register installed at any gas station.

The checks, involving all gas stations in Bulgaria, are to conclude in the next few days. Violators face closure and fines up to BGN 10 000.

NRA data shows that currently about 3 000 gas stations across the country report a total of BGN 400 M in monthly turnover.

All businesses, registered to pay Value Added Tax (VAT), are mandated to connect their cash registers with NRA by the end of September 2011, while by April 2012, all cash registers in Bulgaria must be connected to the Agency.

On Tuesday, the tax agents closed 76 gas stations and 90 closed voluntarily. On Wednesday, 47 gas stations were closed and 56 closed voluntarily.

Bulgarian revenue agency shuts 269 petrol stations across Bulgaria

A total of 269 petrol stations across Bulgaria have been forced to close by the Bulgarian Revenue Agency (NRA) or did not bother opening for business, because they had failed to comply with new regulations in force since January 8 2011.

Starting from January 8, all cash registers in petrol stations were supposed to be wired directly to the NRA. On the first day of the measure, NRA agents closed down 76 establishments, while 90 others decided to close down themselves to avoid sanctions.

On January 12 alone, the NRA shut 47 petrol stations and another 56 remained closed for business on their own accord. In all, as of January 13 2011, 269 petrol stations across Bulgaria remain shut.

The strategy aims to curtail illegal contraband, and funnel between 250-300 million leva into the state Budget.

According to the report, in the next few days, all petrol stations in Bulgaria will be investigated by agents, who have vowed to fine establishments up to 10 000 leva if they flout the new regulations. Alternatively, they could be closed for business altogether.

I wonder if they will be missed. I always thought there appeared to be more filling stations than houses
If they have 3000 petrol stations, that is about one station for every 2400 inhabitants, not drivers, inhabitants
