| Bulgarian ATMs Launch Currency Exchange Option The Bulgarians will soon be able to withdraw US dollars or the single European currency, Euro, from the ATMs across the country
The currency exchange offices in Bulgaria may be forced out of business, as the ATMs will offer currency exchange services following an amendment to the Exchange Offices Ordinance, which will put an end to the currency exchange frauds at the Bulgarian seaside. Also, the foreign citizens arriving in Bulgaria will be able to easily obtain Bulgarian currency at the best possible rates from the ATMs. |

| I don't think I would put any tenners in a machine and expect to get Leva's out I once put 500 quid in an HSBC Pay Money into your Account machine only never to see it again. Lucky I kept the receipt or I would never have got it back. Was accused of making up the transaction made to feel like a thief. The managers face changed when I said what is this receipt for then. Turns out someone in the banks employ was nicking it, and not just from me either. Now that was inside a Bank in the UK an ATM in BG not so likely . |

In the UK, I believe that apart from some very serious apologising on their part, there is legislation in place for you to get compensation. After all, this bank, whoever the employee was, attempted to steal your money. In BG, of course, you would get s*d all - certainly not your money back and certainly no apology. Similar happened to both my girlfriend and her mother. Once, the ATM charged twice and the other time it paid 5 leva notes instead of 10s. You just switch banks. Much smaller amounts involved, but would make a big difference to most Bulgarians. |

Foreign exchange kiosks could become a thing of the past in Bulgaria because of increasing reports of fraud, perpetrated by their staff, Bulgarian daily Standart reported on January 6 2011.
New amendments stipulate that foreign currency will be exchanged for Bulgarian leva and vice versa at specialised ATM machines instead.
Tourists and business travellers will be able to obtain local currency at the aforementioned ATMs which will be installed at airports and major resorts, Standart reported, citing information released from the Bulgarian Finance Ministry.
Internationally, such exchange machines are mostly operational at airports, a model that was likely to be adopted in Bulgaria as well.
Authorities believe that such machines will be welcomed along Bulgaria's coastal resorts in particular, where exchange fraud was reported to be " rampant" . |
