| From Novinite Officers from the Bulgarian traffic police (KAT) receive at least 100 000 bribes annually, according to Tihomir Bezlov from the Centre of Democratic Studies (CDS), the private Bulgarian television channel bTV reported on November 16 2010. The statistics were made public during a forum where results of investigations into " relationships and interactions between organised crime and corruption" in Bulgaria were presented. The research was part of a broader survey of all 27 member states in the European Union, the report said. Widespread corruption within KAT is one of the priorities that the Interior Ministry must deal with, Bezlov said. In the first phase, it is essential that operations and investigations are stepped up, so that the number of bribes falls to below 80 000 a year, the report said. The discussion was set up by the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Security and Public Order and the CDS. The forum itself was opened by the vice-president of the National Assembly and chairman of the Committee on Internal Security and Public Order, Atanas Atanassov and the chairman of the CDS, Ognyan Shentov. ======================================================================== I am stunned

| I think that's per copper! and not a total for the country.50 euro's sounds a lot for one hit. They normally say they would like coffee money so perhaps handing over a couple of sachets of 3 in1 Nescafe at 30 stinks each would be a cheaper option! On second thoughts probably not......I have been pulled twice and touch wood it cost me nothing. The third time they never caught me as they don't have a India 99 (Police Helicopter).I went through the speed trap at about 85mph on a dual carriageway and when I saw the two coppers jumping up and down and diving into the Astra police car like Batman and Robin I knew I had to floor it as that would have been a lock up job.I thought it strange at the time that everyone was in the inside lane going really slow! I don't usually drive that fast by the way but on this occasion I was late for a meeting. We've all done it so please no derogatory comments! |

| Johnbaz,
I'm certainly not disputing what you paid.I know someone else who had a similar experience. Some coppers are greedy.i guess It's better to pay at the roadside rather than go to court in the UK and possibly loose a driving licence. Not always a bad thing corruption! |

I think your right in some cases especially in Bulgaria where going to court must be something of a mine field |
