Bulgarian authorities receive full access to the Schengen Information SystemBulgarian authorities officially received full access and started exchanging information with the Schengen Information System and authorities from across Europe, on November 5 2010, an Interior Ministry statement announced on November 8.
As part of the road map for Bulgaria's entry into the Schengen zone, Bulgarian police will have full access to information available on the SIS database.
The SIS is an information system that allows the respective authorities in the Member States to obtain information regarding certain categories of persons and property, thus allowing for a smooth running of information and accordingly, improving the area of security, freedom and justice. It contributes to the implementation of provisions on the free movement of persons (Title IV of the Treaty) and to judicial co-operation in criminal matters and police co-operation (Title VI of the Treaty).
According to the media statement, the first ever signal from Bulgaria submitted to the SIS came from First Sofia Precinct which reported a stolen vehicle.
Also, Spanish authorities detained a Bulgarian citizen after Bulgarian authorities submitted information to the SIS requesting assistance.
From November 6 to date, a total of 31 signals have been submitted regarding people, vehicles, documents and others, the report said.
